Russ Kun
Russ Joseph Kun (born 8 September 1975) is a Nauruan politician who has been president of Nauru since being elected in the 2022 presidential election. He has served as a member of parliament for Ubenide since 2013. Biography Kun was born on 8 September 1975. He served as a scrutineer for the 2003 and 2004 general elections. He served as acting Secretary for the Ministry of Commerce Industry & Resources in 2005. He served as acting Chief Secretary in 2008 and as acting Secretary of Home Affairs in 2012. Prior to entering Parliament, he worked for the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Environment. Kun also was a member of the Nauru National Commission for UNESCO from 2008 to 2010 and from 2012 to 2013. Kun was first elected to the Parliament of Nauru in 2013, as one of the four members from Ubenide Constituency. He was re-elected in 2016, 2019, and 2022. Russell Effaney Kun (born 24 May 1966) is a political figure from the Pacific nation of Nauru and former powerlifter. Background In the May 2003 elections Kun stood for the Parliament of Nauru, and was duly was elected to represent the Ubenide constituency. Political offices He was Justice Minister in the Ludwig Scotty government from June to August 2003 and returned to that post under René Harris in February 2004. Kun was elected the Speaker of the Parliament of Nauru from 15 July 2004 to 26 October 2004. He lost the post again, however, in June 2004 when Scotty became President again and appointed David Adeang to the post. In September 2004 he became controversial after stating that Health Minister Kieren Keke was ineligible to serve. He lost his seat in Parliament in the October 2004 elections because of the State of Emergency and was out of job in Nauru. 2022 Nauruan Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Nauru on 24 September 2022 to elect all 19 members of parliament. All candidates were elected on a non-partisan basis. Following the election, Russ Kun, a member of parliament for Ubenide, was elected president by parliament. Background In the 2019 elections, nearly half of the Parliament members lost their seats, including incumbent President Baron Waqa. Justice minister David Adeang, Waqa's deputy, retained his seat.
