Rushton Mac
Rushton Mac was a racing greyhound during the 1950s. He won the 1955 English Greyhound Derby and was the 1955 Greyhound of the Year. Early life He was whelped in June 1952 and the litter included a greyhound called Rushton Sport. His sire was Rushton News, owned and trained by Frank Johnson and Johnson with his wife Mary also owned the new litter. The litter were trained out of Boothouse Farm, on The Hall Lane, in Rushton, Cheshire. Racing career 1953 The pair soon made their mark as puppies when both reached the Yorkshire Puppy Derby final at Leeds on 7 November. 1954 Rushton Mac won the St Mungo Cup at Carntyne Stadium before winning the Northumberland Stakes and then heading for an attempt at the Scottish Greyhound Derby along with his brother Rushton Spot. The pair reached the final and on 9 October, where Mac defeated Spot as they secured the first two places in the competition. The Olympic is a greyhound racing competition held annually at Brighton & Hove Greyhound Stadium. It was inaugurated in 1947 at Wandsworth Stadium. Following the closure of Wandsworth in June 1966 the competition switched to Charlton Stadium which itself closed in September 1971. After an eight year gap the event was resurrected by Hove in 1979 and has remained there since. Powderhall Stadium
Powderhall Stadium formerly the Powderhall Grounds was a greyhound racing track in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was located on Beaverhall Road, in the Powderhall ( Broughton) area of northern Edinburgh, beside the Water of Leith. The track closed in 1995 and the site is now a housing estate. Origins The Powderhall Grounds was built in 1869 and gained fame for being the place where Olympian Eric Liddell, portrayed in Chariots of Fire, trained in the 1920s. The stadium was converted for greyhound racing (opening on 3 August 1927) and football one year later, in 1928, when it hosted the original Edinburgh City football team. Monmore Green Stadium
Monmore Green Stadium is a greyhound racing and speedway stadium located in Wolverhampton. The stadium has private suites, a restaurant and a number of bars. The venue is owned and operated by the Ladbrokes Coral group. Speedway Motorcycle speedway is raced there on Monday nights with the Wolverhampton Wolves competing in the top division of the sport, the Elite League where the team is captained by Speedway Grand Prix rider, Sweden's Fredrik Lindgren. Cardiff Greyhounds
Cardiff Greyhounds was the greyhound racing operation held at Cardiff Arms Park in Cardiff from 1927 to 1977. It is not to be confused with the greyhound racing held from 1928 to 1937 at the White City Stadium, Cardiff. Origins and opening To assist with maintenance of the site, a greyhound track was built around the rugby pitch in 1927. The first meeting was held on 7 April 1928. Pre war history The Arms Park (Cardiff) Greyhound Racing Company Limited signed a 50-year lease in 1937, with Cardiff Athletic Club (the owners of the Arms Park) and having no rights to break the agreement or to review the rental until 50 years expired. The circumference of the track was a large 452 yards with long straights of 160 yards. An 'Outside Sumner' hare was used and race distances consisted of 300, 500, 525 and 700 yards. Newcastle Stadium
Newcastle Stadium is a greyhound racing and former motorcycle speedway stadium, located on The Fossway, Byker, Newcastle. Racing at the stadium takes place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The circumference of the track is 415 metres. Until mid-2022, speedway racing took place from March to October. The stadium used to be known as Brough Park until it changed its name to Newcastle Stadium and is now owned by the Arena Racing Company. The 1956 Greyhound Derby took place during June with the final being held on 30 June 1956 at White City Stadium. The winner was Dunmore King and the winning owner Mr Jack McAlister (an Irish farmer) received £1,500. Trev's Perfection
Trev's Perfection was a racing greyhound from the 1940s. He is just one of three greyhounds along with Patricias Hope and Mile Bush Pride to win the Triple Crown which consisted of the English Greyhound Derby, Scottish Greyhound Derby and Welsh Greyhound Derby. Wimbledon Stadium
Wimbledon Stadium, also known as Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium, was a greyhound racing track located in Wimbledon in southwest London, England. It also hosted stock car and other small circuit motor racing events, and until 2005 hosted motorcycle speedway. The stadium hosted the English Greyhound Derby every year between 1985 and 2016. Facing declining attendances and with no renovations undertaken for many years, the stadium was put up for sale by the owners, the Greyhound Racing Association, and closed permanently in March 2017. The site was purchased by Galliard Homes Limited, in order to build 600 new apartments and a new football stadium, the new Plough Lane, for AFC Wimbledon. Laurels (greyhounds)
The Laurels is an original classic greyhound competition held at Perry Barr Stadium. It was run at Wimbledon Stadium from 1930 until 1997. It then moved to Belle Vue Stadium in 1998 and remained there until 2017 when it switched to Newcastle Stadium. After two years at Newcastle and a cancellation in 2020 due to COVID-19 it switched to Perry Barr in 2021. competition lost its Category 1 status but was still regarded as one of the most valuable prizes during the racing year. The Arena Racing Company gained the prestigious competition in 2017 from the GRA and it returned to Category 1 status in 2022. Walthamstow Stadium was a greyhound racing track in the London Borough of Waltham Forest in east London.BBC News - Walthamstow race track to close' It was regarded as the leading greyhound racing stadium in Britain following the closure of White City in 1984.
