Vanuatu
Vanuatu ( or ; ), officially the Republic of Vanuatu (french: link=no, République de Vanuatu; bi, Ripablik blong Vanuatu), is an island country located in the South Pacific Ocean. The archipelago, which is of volcanic origin, is east of northern Australia, northeast of New Caledonia, east of New Guinea, southeast of the Solomon Islands, and west of Fiji. Vanuatu was first inhabited by Melanesian people. The first Europeans to visit the islands were a Spanish expedition led by Portuguese navigator Fernandes de Queirós, who arrived on the largest island, Espíritu Santo, in 1606. Queirós claimed the archipelago for Spain, as part of the colonial Spanish East Indies, and named it . In the 1880s, France and the United Kingdom claimed parts of the archipelago, and in 1906, they agreed on a framework for jointly managing the archipelago as the New Hebrides through an Anglo-French condominium. An independence movement arose in the 1970s, and the Republic of Vanuatu was fou ...

Political Parties In Vanuatu
This article lists political parties in Vanuatu. Vanuatu has a multi-party system with numerous political parties, in which no one party often has a chance of gaining power alone, and parties must work with each other to form coalition governments. Not all parties have a consistent ideology, and of those that don't, most members tend to support the political positions/attitudes of the party leader. Politicians switching parties several times over the span of a few years is not uncommon. Governments typically comprise coalitions of numerous small parties which change regularly, with parties and MPs "crossing the floor," and Prime Ministers being ousted in motions of no confidence has previously occurred several times in one legislative term. The parties *Friend Melanesian Party (FMP) *Green Confederation (''Vanuatu Grin Konfederesen'', Ol Grin) * Iauko Group (''Iauko Grup'', IG) *Land and Justice Party (''Graon mo Jastis Pati'', GJP) *Leaders Party of Vanuatu (LPV) *Melanesian ...

National United Party (Vanuatu)
The National United Party (NUP, generally pronounced ''noop'') is a political party in Vanuatu. It was founded by Vanuatu's independence leader Walter Lini when he broke away from the Vanua'aku Pati, alongside businessman Đinh Văn Thân. It is a social democratic party which traditionally received most of its support from English speakers. In 1991, Walter Lini, who had served as prime minister of Vanuatu for 12 years as a member of the Vanua'aku Pati and lost his position after a split in the party, founded the National United Party, soon becoming its leader. Following Walter's death in 1999, his brother Ham Lini became party leader. The party became one of the largest political parties in Vanuatu along with the Vanua'aku Party and the Union of Moderate Parties, and participated in coalitions with both at various times. In the July 2004 elections, the party won 10 of the 52 seats, and because of losses by the other major parties, it became the largest single party in Parliament ...

Snap Election
A snap election is an election that is called earlier than the one that has been scheduled. Generally, a snap election in a parliamentary system (the dissolution of parliament) is called to capitalize on an unusual electoral opportunity or to decide a pressing issue, under circumstances when an election is not required by law or convention. A snap election differs from a recall election in that it is initiated by politicians (usually the head of government or ruling party) rather than voters, and from a by-election in that a completely new parliament is chosen as opposed to merely filling vacancies in an already established assembly. Early elections can also be called in certain jurisdictions after a ruling coalition is dissolved if a replacement coalition cannot be formed within a constitutionally set time limit. Since the power to call snap elections (the dissolution of parliament) usually lies with the incumbent, they often result in increased majorities for the party alread ...

President Nikenike Vurobaravu dissolved Parliament in August 2022 on advice of the Council of Ministers ahead of a no-confidence vote against Prime Minister Bob Loughman. Background On 18 August 2022 the new president dissolved Parliament midway through the parliamentary term at the request of Prime Minister Bob Loughman, who requested the dissolution to avoid a no confidence vote. The motion sparked criticism from the opposition, with opposition leader Ralph Regenvanu announcing that the opposing parties would contest the dissolution in court. Electoral system The 52 members of Parliament were elected for four years terms by single non-transferable vote in eighteen constituencies, ten of which were multi-member constituencies of between two and seven seats, while the remaining eight were single-member constituencies in which the vote takes the form of a first-past-the-post syst ...

Vanua'aku Pati
The Vanua'aku Pati () is a democratic socialist political party in Vanuatu. History The party was founded on 17 August 1971 by Walter Lini as the New Hebridean Cultural Association, renamed later that same year as the New Hebrides National Party, and was one of two parties formed during the country's move towards independence. While the NHNP was supported by British interests, the Union of New Hebrides Communities was supported by French interests. The NHNP went on to win the 1975 elections and in 1977 it was renamed the Vanua'aku Pati. The party won the pre-independence 1979 elections and Lini became chief minister. The country gained independence in 1980 and Lini became the first Prime Minister of Vanuatu, remaining in the post until 1991. In 1991 the party split, and Lini was among those who left the party. After the 1991 elections, the party lost its dominance over the government. Despite this, the party remained strong. During the next decade, as party members Donald Kalpok ...
