Benjamin Piatt Runkle
Benjamin Piatt Runkle (September 3, 1836 – June 28, 1916) was an American military officer, Episcopal priest, and Freemason, who is noted as being one of the seven founders of Sigma Chi fraternity. Prior to joining the clergy, he served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He served as Chief Superintendent of Freedmen's Affairs in Kentucky, and was plaintiff in the Supreme Court case Runkle v. United States. Runkle also twice served as trustee of Miami University. Early life Runkle was born in West Liberty, Ohio, to Ralph Edwin Runkle and Hannah Isabella Piatt. He attended Geneva College and, later, Miami University, from which he graduated in July 1857. While attending Miami University, Runkle became a Freemason as well as one of the seven founders of the Sigma Chi fraternity. Runkle married Venitia Reynolds on June 4, 1857, and their daughter, Maud Elizabeth Runkle, was born on January 15, 1859, in Findlay, Ohio. After college, he studied law under General ... Bertha Runkle
Bertha Runkle (after marriage, Bash; 1879–1958) was an American novelist and playwright born in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey, Berkeley Heights, New Jersey. From a literary family, she wrote five novels. Her first and best known, ''The Helmet of Navarre'', was made into a Broadway play. Early years Her father, Cornelius A. Runkle (1833–1888), died when Runkle was nine, and she and her mother Lucia Runkle moved to New York City. Her father had been a respected New York lawyer who had served as legal counsel for the ''New York Tribune'' and her mother had worked as an editorial writer. Lucia Runkle came upon a poem by her daughter and was anxious to have it judged on its merits by the editor-in-chief. With no clue to the authorship, he was delighted with its strength, its unusual form, and the splendid swing of the lines. John Daniel Runkle
John Daniel Runkle (October 11, 1822 – July 8, 1902) was an American educator and mathematician. He served as acting president of MIT from 1868 to 1870 and president between 1870 and 1878. Biography Professor Runkle was born at Root, New York State. He worked on his father's farm until he was of age, and then studied and taught until he entered the Lawrence Scientific School of Harvard University, where he graduated in 1851. His ability as a mathematician led in 1849 to his appointment as assistant in the preparation of the ''American Ephemeris and Nautical Almanac'', in which he continued to engage until 1884. He was professor of mathematics in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1865 until his retirement in 1902. Runkle become aware of the work of Victor Della-Vos's work in Russia at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition in 1876, he was impressed by the combination of theoretical and practical learning. Lucia Isabella Runkle (née Gilbert; August 20, 1844 – 1922), was an editorial writer and contributor to the ''New York Tribune'' and ''Harper's''. She was one of the first women editorialists at a major American newspaper. Biography Runkle was born in North Brookfield, Massachusetts and educated in Fall River and Worcester, Massachusetts. She moved to New York City and for many years she was an editorial writer and contributor to the ''New-York Tribune'', in which she published a series of articles on cooking, treated from an artistic standpoint. She also wrote frequently for other journals and for magazines including the '' Christian Union'', later '' The Outlook.''
