''Rune'' is a role-playing game published by Atlas Games in 2001. Description Atlas Games contracted Robin Laws to write the ''Rune'' role-playing game, based on the computer game ''Rune''. Laws determined that for ''Rune'', "the game would need to have a big point of difference to distinguish it from the many other fantasy games available"; in this case, the game would allow players to swap roles with the Game Master (GM): "You can win! And when you're not the GM, it's not boring because the GM can win!" Atlas Games is a company which publishes role-playing games, board games and card games. Its founder and current president is John Nephew. History When Atlas Games did not have the finances to publish '' On the Edge'' (1994), they partnered with Jerry Corrick and Bob Brynildson and formed a new corporation called Trident, Inc. to publish the game. Eventually Atlas subsumed into Trident; Brynildson, Corrick, and their store - The Source Comics & Games - continued to support Atlas with their business experience and perspective. Robin Laws
Robin D. Laws (born October 14, 1964 in Orillia, Ontario, Canada) is a Canadian writer and game designer who lives in Toronto, Canada. He is the author of a number of novels and role-playing games as well as an anthologist. Career Robin D. Laws has been a professional game designer and an author since the early 1990s. Game designer Robin D. Laws has been playing role-playing games since he was a teenager and has worked as a game designer since the early 1990s. ''Rune'' is an action-adventure video game developed by Human Head Studios which was released in 2000. The game is based on Ragnarok, showing the conflict between the Gods Odin and Loki and the buildup to Ragnarok. Built on the Unreal Engine, the game casts the player as Ragnar, a young Viking warrior whose mettle is tested when Loki and his evil allies plot to destroy the world and bring about Ragnarok. Upon release, ''Rune'' received generally positive reviews. A standalone expansion pack for the game, '' Rune: Halls of Valhalla'', was released in 2001. Both the base game and expansion were ported to Linux by Loki Software. Ryan C. Gordon, a former Loki employee, would also later port Human Head's 2006 title ''Prey''. Game Master
A gamemaster (GM; also known as game master, game manager, game moderator, referee, or storyteller) is a person who acts as an organizer, officiant for regarding rules, arbitrator, and moderator for a multiplayer role-playing game. They are more common in co-operative games in which players work together than in competitive games in which players oppose each other. The act performed by a gamemaster is sometimes referred to as "Gamemastering" or simply "GM-ing".
