Ruken
Ruken (foaled in 1964 in California) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse who competed at the highest levels in California and was the bettors third choice to win the 1967 Kentucky Derby. Bred and raced by Louis R. Rowan, Ruken was sired by Nasrullah's son Nashville who won the 1957 Lakes And Flowers and Palos Verdes Handicaps. His dam was Thank You Ma'm, a daughter of the multiple stakes winner Your Host who sired the five-time American Horse of the Year, Kelso. Ridden by Fernando Alvarez and trained by Clyde Turk, Ruken won the 1967 Santa Anita Derby, the most important event for three-year-olds in California. At Keeneland he beat the 2 year-old champion Successor in the Spendthrift Purse. Fernando Alvarez (jockey)
Fernando Alvarez (; August 30, 1937 – June 27, 1999) was an American Thoroughbred horse race, Thoroughbred horse racing jockey and Horse trainer, trainer who rode winners from coast to coast including in the two most important races in California. A native of Santiago Chile, Alvarez began riding there at age sixteen, winning with his very first mount. The following year he went to Panama where he rode for seven years before emigrating to the United States. In 1964 Fernando Alvarez rode Roman Brother to a second-place finish in the third leg of the United States Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, U.S. Triple Crown series, the Belmont Stakes. He then won with the colt in the American Derby and Discovery Handicap. Alvarez's most significant wins came at Santa Anita Park for Louis R. Rowan, co-founder of the Oak Tree Racing Association. Clyde Turk
Clyde Turk (November 15, 1907 – April 24, 1995) was an American jockey and trainer of thoroughbred racehorses. He began riding horses in the 1920s and in 1929 was riding at the new Agua Caliente Racetrack in Tijuana, Mexico. He competed at tracks throughout California and at the newly built Santa Anita Racetrack in Arcadia, California he rode the first-ever winner for trainer Noble Threewitt during the opening season in which he would also win important races such as the San Felipe Stakes and Santa Margarita Handicap, the latter a race he would win three more times as a trainer. The Del Mar Futurity is a seven-furlong American Thoroughbred horse race held annually at Del Mar Racetrack in Del Mar, California. A Grade I event since 2007, the race is open to two-year-old horses and offers a purse of $300,000. In 1971, it was run in two divisions on Turf. Santa Anita Derby
The Santa Anita Derby is an American Grade 1 thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds run each April at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. It is currently run at a distance of miles on the dirt and carries a purse of $400,000. It is one of the final prep races on the official Road to the Kentucky Derby. History Inaugurated in 1935, the Santa Anita Derby has long been considered the most important West Coast stepping-stone to the Kentucky Derby. Stepping Stone Purse
The Stepping Stone Purse was an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually in the latter part of April at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. Open to three-year-old horses, it was, along with the Derby Trial Stakes, one of two final prep races hosted by Churchill Downs running up to the Kentucky Derby. In 1959, Sword Dancer won the Stepping Stone Purse, then ran second in the Kentucky Derby before winning the Belmont Stakes. The following year, Bally Ache won this race then ran second in the Derby but won the Preakness Stakes. In 1969, future U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee Majestic Prince won this race by six lengths while setting a new stakes record and then won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. Nasrullah (horse)
Nasrullah (March 2, 1940 – May 26, 1959) was a Thoroughbred racehorse that was bred in Ireland and trained in the United Kingdom before becoming a champion sire in both Europe and North America. As a two-year-old, he won the Coventry Stakes and finished second in the Middle Park Stakes, ending the year as the top-rated colt of his generation. In the following season, he became increasingly difficult to manage, and his temperament compromised his racing career. He was the beaten favourite in the 2,000 Guineas and finished a close third in the Derby Stakes before winning the Champion Stakes. Successor (March 27, 1964 – August 1, 1971) was an American Champion Thoroughbred racehorse. Background He was bred and raced by Gladys Phipps and her brother Ogden L. Mills under their Wheatley Stable banner. A full brother to Bold Lad, his sire was eight-time Leading sire in North America, Bold Ruler and his dam was the Champion racing mare, Misty Morn. Racing career Successor was the American Champion Two-Year-Old Colt of 1966. Among his wins, Successor defeated the previously unbeaten Dr. Fager by a length to earn a victory in the Champagne Stakes, recording the second fastest time in the race's history. On his final start of the year he won the Garden State Stakes on a sloppy track in November to confirm his position as the year's leading two-year-old.
