Rukarara River
The Rukarara River (or Lukarara) is a river in western Rwanda that is a tributary of the Mwogo River, in turn a tributary of the Nyabarongo River. It is the most distant headwater of the Nile. Sources The Rukarara rises in forested country in southern Rwanda to the east of the Congo-Nile Divide. The Kamiranzovu Swamp in the Nyungwe Forest Reserve provides a natural reservoir for the Rukarara. The source of the Rukarara is now known to be the overall source of the Nile. This was confirmed by a 2005/2006 expedition up the river with modern navigation equipment. Nyabarongo River
The Nyabarongo (or Nyawarungu) is a major river in Rwanda, part of the upper headwaters of the Nile. With a total length of , it is the longest river entirely in Rwanda. It is extended in Lake Rweru including a upper course of Kagera River before joining into Ruvuvu River to form the Kagera River. The river begins its course at the confluence of the rivers Mbirurume and Mwogo in the South West of the country. These two rivers themselves begin in Nyungwe Forest, and are considered by some to be the most distant source of the Nile. From its start, Nyabarongo flows northward for 85 km (53 miles), and forms the border between the Western and Southern Provinces. Mwogo River
The Mwogo River is a river in western Rwanda that is a tributary of the Nyabarongo River. Course The Mwogo rises in forested country in southern Rwanda to the east of the Congo-Nile Divide. It has its sources in the Kitabi sector of the Nyamagabe District. It runs eastward past Nyarusiza into the Huye District. It runs in a northeast direction through the western part of this district, entering the Nyanza district. In Nyanza district it runs northeast, passing Mweya at the point where the Gihimbi River enters it from the left. Below this point it is joined by the Rukarara River from the left. Congo-Nile Divide (Rwanda-Burundi)
The Congo-Nile Divide region of Rwanda and Burundi is a mountainous area in the southern section of the Congo-Nile Divide, to the east of the Albertine Rift. The region includes the Nyungwe and Kibira national parks. The Bugoyi people live in the region. Geography The region of the divide is mountainous, with some peaks over high. Nyamagabe District
Nyamagabe is a district (''akarere'') in Southern Province, Rwanda. Its capital is Gasaka. Geography, flora and fauna The district lies between Butare and Cyangugu in the south-west of Rwanda, and contains much of the former Gikongoro Province, which was disbanded in 2006. Nyungwe National Park
The Nyungwe Forest () is located in southwestern Rwanda, on the border with Burundi, where it is contiguous with the Kibira National Park to the south, and Lake Kivu and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west. The Nyungwe rainforest is probably the best preserved montane rainforest in Africa. It is located in the watershed between the basin of the river Congo to the west and the basin of the river Nile to the east. From the east side of the Nyungwe forest comes also one of the branches of the Nile sources. Nyungwe National Park was established in 2004 and covers an area of approximately of rainforest, bamboo, grassland, swamps, and bogs. The nearest town is Cyangugu, to the west. Mbirurume River
The Mbirurume (also called Bilirume, Biruruma, Birurume, Bitirume) is a river in western Rwanda that is a tributary of the Nyabarongo River. The Mbirurume rises in forested country in southern Rwanda to the east of the Congo-Nile Divide. It originates in the extreme north of the Nyungwe National Park, in the Nyamagabe District.
