Rugby union in Guam is a minor but growing sport. They are currently ranked 82nd by the International Rugby Board, IRB. History Rugby came to Guam via three separate streams, firstly, through the visits of British, New Zealand and Australian sailors; secondly, through the American presence, which has been there from the turn of the twentieth century; and thirdly through contact with neighbouring Pacific islands, where the game is popular. Guam has also had a long running, but sometimes tempestuous, relationship with Japan. It is not known if the forces of the Japanese occupation in WWII played the game at all there, but certainly, a large number Japanese retirees have also taken an interest in promoting the game. Guam Rugby Football Union
The Guam Rugby Football Union (GRFU) is the governing body for rugby union in Guam. The union was formed in 1997 as a sports federation to help develop and host rugby when Guam was chosen to host the 1999 South Pacific Games. They were recognized as a member of the Guam National Olympic Committee in 1996. They were accepted as a full member by the World Rugby, International Rugby Board in 1998. Asian Five Nations
The Asia Rugby Championship, or ARC, is an annual rugby union competition held amongst national rugby sides within the Asia Rugby region. The competition was originally known as the Asian Rugby Football Tournament when founded in 1969, and was called the Asian Five Nations from 2008 to 2014. The winner of the competition's top division is recognised as the rugby champion of Asia. The top division, sometimes referred to as the Tri Nations, includes the top three Asian teams each season. Division 1 includes the next four teams and Division 2 includes the next four. Division three is further divided geographically, with each of the West, East and South Central divisions including three teams. The Guam women's national rugby sevens team is Guam's national representative in Rugby sevens. History In 2016, they participated in the 2016 Asia Rugby Women's Sevens Series and placed seventh overall. Guam also attended the Asia Rugby Women’s Sevens Trophy tournament in Seria, Brunei in 2018. They competed at the 2019 Asia Rugby Women's Sevens Trophy in Jakarta and finished in fifth place. Guam National Rugby Union Team
The Guam national rugby union team represents the United States territory of Guam in international rugby union. They have yet to make their debut at the Rugby World Cup, though they have attempted to qualify for the World Cup. The national side is ranked 74th in the world (as of 29 July 2019). History Guam attempted to qualify for the 2007 Rugby World Cup in France, taking part in Division 3 Pool B of Round 1a of the Asian qualifying tournament. They competed against three other nations in the pool; Kazakhstan, India and Malaysia. In their first match of the pool competition, Guam played India in Guam and drew 8-all with them.
