Rufina Peter
Rufina Peter is a Papua New Guinean agricultural economist and politician. Until her election to the National Parliament on 5 August 2022, Papua New Guinea (PNG) was one of only three countries without a woman in parliament. She was also elected as Governor of Central Province in the 2022 general election, becoming the province's first female governor. Early life and education One of eight children, Peter attended a Catholic school in Tapini in the hilly, northwestern part of Central Province. Her father did not earn enough to support four children in high school and she had to work while at school to help pay for the fees. She obtained an undergraduate degree in agriculture from the Papua New Guinea University of Technology in Lae between 1985 and 1988 and a master's degree in agricultural economics from the University of New England, in Armidale, New South Wales, between 1990 and 1992. Central Province (Papua New Guinea)
Central Province is a province in Papua New Guinea located on the southern coast of the country. It has a population of 237,016 (2010 census) people and is in size. The seat of government of Central Province, which is located within the National Capital District outside the province, is the Port Moresby suburb of Konedobu. On 9 October 2007, the Central Province government announced plans to build a new provincial capital city at Bautama, which lies within Central Province near Port Moresby, although there has been little progress in constructing it. Whereas Tok Pisin is the main lingua franca in all Papua New Guinean towns, in part of the southern mainland coastal area centred on Central Province, Hiri Motu is a stronger lingua franca (but not in Port Moresby). Kessy Sawang is a Papua New Guinean politician and former senior civil servant. Until her election and that of Rufina Peter to the National Parliament in August 2022, Papua New Guinea (PNG) had been one of only three countries without a woman in parliament. Early life and education Sawang was born in the Rai Coast District in the southeast of Papua New Guinea’s Madang Province. Her father was a health worker and provincial minister of health who contributed to the eradication of leprosy in the area. Delilah Pueka Gore (born 24 June 1962) is a Papua New Guinean politician. She was a member of the National Parliament of Papua New Guinea from 2012 to 2017, representing the electorate of Sohe Open. She was Minister for Higher Education, Science, Research and Technology and later Minister for Religion, Youth & Community Development in the government of Peter O'Neill. She was elected to the Sohe District, in the Northern Province, in the 2012 election. Julie Soso
Julie Soso Akeke (born 29 August 1960) is a Papua New Guinean politician. She was the Governor of Eastern Highlands Province from 2012 to 2017. Background Soso was a broadcaster and women's advocate before entering politics, serving as president of the Eastern Highlands Provincial Council of Women and the deputy chairperson of the district AIDS council. She advocated a ban on firearms and ammunition in Papua New Guinea, called on the provincial government to ban alcohol, and supported reserved seats for women in parliament. Carol Kidu
Dame Carol Anne Kidu ( Millwater; born 10 October 1948), also known as Carol, Lady Kidu, DBE, is an Australian-born Papua New Guinean politician. Kidu was the only female Member of Parliament in the 2002–2007 and 2007–2012 National Parliaments, and served as Minister for Community Development under Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare from 2002 until 2 August 2011, and as Opposition Leader from 15 February 2012 until her retirement from politics in July 2012. She was the leader of the Melanesian Alliance Party until her retirement.
