Rudolf Schmid (luger)
Rudolf Schmid (21 March 1951 in Liezen - 21 October 2014) was an Austrian luger who competed during the mid-1970s. Teamed with Franz Schachner together they won the bronze medal in the men's doubles event at the 1976 Winter Olympics of Innsbruck. Schmid also won two bronze medals in the men's doubles event at the FIL World Luge Championships (1974, 1975). He also won two medals at the FIL European Luge Championships with a silver in men's doubles (1970) and a bronze in men's singles (1974). On 21 October 2014 Schmid was killed in a cycling accident in Oberwart, Austria at the age of 64. A luge is a small one- or two-person sled on which one sleds supine (face up) and feet-first. A luger steers by using the calf muscles to flex the sled's runners or by exerting opposite shoulder pressure to the seat. Racing sleds weigh for singles and for doubles. Manfred Schmid (born 6 June 1944 in Liezen) is an Austrian former luger who competed from the mid-1960s to the late 1970s. Competing in four Winter Olympics, he won two medals at Grenoble in 1968 with a gold in the men's singles event and a silver in the men's doubles event. Schmid also won seven medals at the FIL World Luge Championships with two gold (doubles: 1969, 1970), four silvers (singles: 1969, 1975; doubles: 1967, 1971), and one bronze (singles: 1978).
