Ruckersville, Georgia
Ruckersville is an unincorporated community in Elbert County, Georgia. History Ruckersville was founded in the 1773, and named after Ruckersville, Virginia. The pioneering Rucker family maintained the Rucker House (Ruckersville, Georgia), Rucker House at the site, which still stands today. A post office called Ruckersville was established in 1823, and remained in operation until 1901. The Georgia General Assembly incorporated Ruckersville as a town in 1822. The town's municipal charter was repealed in 1995. Joseph Rucker Lamar (1857–1916), an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, was born in Ruckersville. Ruckersville is a census-designated place (CDP) in Greene County, Virginia, United States, located in a rural area north of Charlottesville. The population as of the 2020 Estimate was 1,321, a 17.7% increase from the 2010 census with 1,141. The community lies amidst hills, mountain views, trees, and farmland. It is located at the intersection of two major highways, north–south U.S. Route 29 and east–west U.S. Route 33. It was founded in 1732, by the same family that established Ruckersville, Georgia. Joseph Rucker Lamar
Joseph Rucker Lamar (October 14, 1857 – January 2, 1916) was an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court appointed by President William Howard Taft. A cousin of former associate justice Lucius Lamar, he served from 1911 until his death in 1916. Biography Born in Ruckersville, Elbert County, Georgia, Lamar was the son of a minister and attended the Academy of Richmond County in Augusta, Georgia and the Martin Institute in Jefferson, Georgia. Lamar descended from William Speer Sr. (1745–1830) a Presbyterian immigrant from Ireland. During his time in Augusta, he lived next door to and was the "closest friend" of future president Woodrow Wilson, whose father was the local Presbyterian minister. They both also attended Joseph T.
