Ruby Thoma (born Ruby Dediya in 1949 in NauruDeveloping a More Facilitating Environment for Women’s Political Participation in Nauru'', South Pacific Forum) is a Nauruan politician. After completing secondary school in Australia, she was trained as a nurse at Epworth Hospital in Melbourne. She graduated from the University of Otago Christchurch School of Medicine and became a midwife in Nauru. Entering politics, she stood as a candidate for the 1983 Nauruan parliamentary election, 1983 general election, in the Anetan District, Anetan/Ewa District, Nauru, Ewa constituency. Bernard Annen Auwen Dowiyogo (14 February 1946 – 9 March 2003) was a Nauruan politician who served as President of Nauru on seven separate occasions. During this time, he also served as a Member of Parliament for the constituency of Ubenide. Background and early career Dowiyogo was born in Nauru on 14 February 1946. He first became an elected member of Nauru's 18-seat parliament in 1973. Hammer DeRoburt (25 September 1922 – 15 July 1992) was a Nauruan politician and independence leader. He led negotiations for independence from Australia and the end of the country's status as a United Nations trust territory. He was subsequently elected as the inaugural president of Nauru, serving four terms in office (1968–1976, 1978–1986, 1986, 1986–1989). Prior to independence he was head chief of Nauru and chair of the Nauru Local Government Council. Early life DeRoburt was born in Nauru on 25 September 1922.
