Jan Rubeš
Jan Ladislav Rubeš CM (6 June 1920 – 29 June 2009) was a Czech-Canadian bass opera singer and actor. Life and career Rubeš was born in Volyně, Czechoslovakia, to Ružena (née Kellnerová) and Jan Rubeš. Not long after World War II, he graduated from the Prague Conservatoire and joined the Prague Opera House as a bass singer. In 1948, he won first prize at the Geneva International Music Festival and emigrated to Canada at the end of the year to pursue a career in a wider sphere. Beginning as a singer with the Canadian Opera Company, he subsequently directed and became director of touring, before switching to radio and television, where he became well known as an actor and presenter in Canada. He is noted for his portrayal of Amish patriarch Eli Lapp in Peter Weir's major-market film ''Witness'' and Jan in '' D2: The Mighty Ducks''. Janek Rubeš
Janek (Jan) Rubeš (born 24 December 1987) is a Czech reporter, documentarist, vlogger and director. He is mainly known for the YouTube channel ''Honest Guide'', which he runs with his friend and cameraman Honza Mikulka. The channel provides tips for tourists, including tips on how to avoid tourist traps and scams in many cities, mainly Prague. In 2016 the Czech edition of Forbes featured Rubeš in their ''30 under 30'' list'': 30 of the most talented Czechs under 30 years old''. In 2019, he won the ' (''Journalist Quail'', awarded to young journalists under the award of Karel Havlíček Borovský) for his investigative and brave journalism. The British newspaper The Independent named him and Honza Mikulka "the patron saints of Prague tourism". Susan Douglas Rubeš
Susan Douglas Rubeš C.M. (13 March 1925 – 23 January 2013) was an Austrian-born Canadian actress and producer. She was sometimes credited as Susan Douglas or Susan Rubes. Life and career Rubeš was born Zuzka Zenta Bursteinová in Vienna, Austria, the only child of Charlotte and Alfred Burstein. Her family was Jewish. When Zuzka was a child, her parents moved to a farm in Czechoslovakia, where they bred race horses. Her family took her to the theater or opera in Brno, and, on occasion, would visit Zuzka's maternal grandmother in Vienna, the manager of the Burgtheater. She began studying ballet at the age of eight. In 1939, Alfred and Charlotte moved to Paris to escape the German invasion, and a year later, Zuzka and her mother moved to the United States to escape the war in Europe, three months before the Germans invaded Paris.
