The Royal Society of Miniature Painters, Sculptors and Gravers, more commonly known as the Royal Miniature Society (RMS), is an art society founded in 1895 dedicated to upholding and continuing the tradition of miniature painting and sculpture, generally meaning the painted portrait miniature, a particular English tradition. The Society's aims are to "esteem, protect and practise the traditional 16th Century art of miniature work, emphasising the infinite patience needed for its fine techniques." Since 2002, its patron has been Charles III. History The Society was founded in 1896 by Alyn Williams, originally as The Society of Miniature Painters. A royal charter was granted by King Edward VII in 1904, and it became the Royal Miniature Society. To highlight the Society's growing importance, the President's Jewel was commissioned in 1920. John Hassall (illustrator)
John Hassall (21 May 18688 March 1948) was an English illustrator, known for his advertisements and poster designs. Biography Hassall was born in Walmer, Kent on the 21st of May, 1868, the eldest son of Lieutenant Christopher Clark Hassall R. N., of a Cheshire family of wine-merchants, and his wife, Louisa, daughter of the Rev. Joseph Butterworth Owen, incumbent of St. Jude's, Chelsea. Owen's early life was marked by tragedy. Hassall's father, who had served in the fleet at the siege of Sevastapol, was paralysed as the result of an accident on board ship. He died at the age of thirty-eight. His mother later remarried an officer in the Royal Marines at Chatham, who later became General Sir William Purvis Wright, K.C.B. He was educated in Worthing, at Newton Abbot College, and at Neuenheim College, Heidelberg. Dudley Hardy Royal Institute of Oil Painters, ROI, Royal Society of British Artists, RBA (15 January 1867 – 11 August 1922), was an English painter and illustrator. Nellie Mary Hepburn-Edmunds (1879 ''Full article not seen, but title gives birth date'' - 14 February 1953) was a British painter of portrait miniatures. Biography Hepburn-Edmunds attended the Slade School of Fine Art in London and the Westminster School of Art, studying under William Mouat Loudan. She was a member of the council of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters, and served as the Vice-President of the society from 1912. Her work was exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris in 1931, and at the Royal Academy for 45 years after her work was first accepted while she was at the Slade School. Gladys Kathleen Madge Bell née Farrar (1882–1965) was a British artist and miniature painter. Biography Bell studied at the Cope and Nichols' School of Art at Kensington in London. Illuminated Manuscript
An illuminated manuscript is a formally prepared document where the text is often supplemented with flourishes such as borders and miniature illustrations. Often used in the Roman Catholic Church for prayers, liturgical services and psalms, the practice continued into secular texts from the 13th century onward and typically include proclamations, enrolled bills, laws, charters, inventories and deeds. While Islamic manuscripts can also be called illuminated, and use essentially the same techniques, comparable Far Eastern and Mesoamerican works are described as ''painted''. The earliest illuminated manuscripts in existence come from the Kingdom of the Ostrogoths and the Eastern Roman Empire and date from between 400 and 600 CE. Samuel Cooper (painter)
Samuel Cooper (16095 May 1672), sometimes spelt as Samuel Cowper, was an English miniature painter, and younger brother of Alexander Cooper. Life He is believed to have been born in London, and was a nephew of John Hoskins, the miniature painter, by whom he was educated. He lived in Henrietta Street, Covent Garden, and frequented the Covent Garden Coffee-House. Samuel Pepys, who makes many references to him, tells us he was an excellent musician, playing well upon the lute, and also a good linguist, speaking French with ease. According to other contemporary writers, he was a short, stout man, of a ruddy countenance. He married one Christiana, whose portrait is at Welbeck Abbey, and he had one daughter. Christiana's sister Edith was the mother of Alexander Pope. In 1668 he was instructed by Pepys to paint a portrait of Mrs Pepys, for which he charged £30.
