Royal Canadian Academy
The Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA) is a Canadian arts-related organization that was founded in 1880. History 1880 to 1890 The title of Royal Canadian Academy of Arts was received from Queen Victoria on 16 July 1880. The Governor General of Canada, the Marquess of Lorne, was its first patron. The painter Lucius O’Brien was its first President. The objects of the Academy as stated in the 1881 publication of the organization's constitution were three-fold: *First - the institution of a National Gallery at the seat of Government; *Second - the holding of Exhibitions in the principal cities of the Dominion; *Third - the establishment of Schools of Art and Design. Thomas Fuller (architect)
Thomas Fuller (March 8, 1823 – September 28, 1898) was an English-born Canadian architect. From 1881 to 1896, he was Chief Dominion Architect for the Government of Canada, during which time he played a role in the design and construction of every major federal building. Fuller was born in Bath, Somerset, England, where he trained as an architect. While living in Bath and London, he did a number of projects. In 1845, he left for Antigua, where he spent two years working on the new St John's Cathedral, before emigrating to Canada in 1857. Settling in Toronto, he formed a partnership with Chilion Jones with Fuller responsible for design work. The company first won the contract to design the Church of St. Stephen-in-the-Fields. In 1859, The Legislative Assembly in Ottawa voted the sum of £75,000 for the erection of a "Parliament House" and offered a premium of $1000 for the best design within that budget. Henry Sandham
Henry "Hy" Sandham (24 May 1842 – 21 June 1910) was a Canadian painter and illustrator. He was the brother of author and numismatist Alfred Sandham. Biography Born in Montreal, Sandham decided at an early age to pursue an artistic career, and was employed in William Notman's photographic studio at the age of 14. By 18, he was an assistant to Notman's partner John Arthur Fraser, who managed the studio's art department. As there was no art school in Montreal at the time, Sandham learned his craft from Fraser, as well as local artists Otto Reinhold Jacobi, Adolphe Vogt, and C. J. Way. When Fraser left Montreal in 1868 to open a Toronto branch of Notman and Fraser, Sandham became the new head of the art department. William Raphael
William Raphael (August 22, 1833 – March 15, 1914), born Israel Rafalsky (), was a Prussian-born Canadian painter, best known for his lively genre scenes of the Montreal harbour and market life. He was the first Jewish professional artist to establish himself in Canada. Biography Born in Nakel, West Prussia, of Orthodox Jewish background, he had a rigid academic training at the Berlin School of Fine Art with and Karl Begas. In 1856, he emigrated to New York City and then went to Montreal in 1857, where he remained for the rest of his life. He worked at Notman`s studio and with A.B. Henry Langley (architect)
Henry Langley (26 November 1836 – 1907) was a Canadian architect based in Toronto. He was active from 1854 to 1907. Among the first architects born and trained in Canada, he was a founding members of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1880 and was instrumental in establishing the Ontario Association of Architects in 1889. A conservative in architectural design, he is primarily known for designing numerous churches in the Toronto area, although he designed many secular buildings as well including residential, commercial and public buildings. Langley designed 70 churches throughout Ontario. He was the first chair of the Department of Architecture at the University of Toronto, where he taught during the 1880s and 1890s. Robert Harris (painter)
Robert Harris (September 18, 1849 – February 27, 1919) was a Welsh-born Canadian painter, most noted for his portrait of the Fathers of Confederation. Early life Born in Caerhun, Conwy, Wales, Robert Harris grew up on his father’s farm before moving to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island in 1856. Encouraged by his mother, he developed an interest in art, and to practice drawing he often sketched images from magazines. In 1867, he travelled to Liverpool, where he independently studied and sketched from the plaster casts in the local museum, learning human anatomy and proportion. John Arthur Fraser
John Arthur Fraser (also known as John A. Fraser and J. A. Fraser) (9 January 1838 – 1 January 1898) was an English artist, photography entrepreneur and teacher. He undertook various paintings for the Canadian Pacific Railway. He is known for his highly realistic landscapes of Canada and the United States, many of them watercolor paintings. Life Early years (1838–1860) John Arthur Fraser was born on 9 January 1838 in London, England. His parents were John Fraser of Portsoy, Scotland, and Isabella Warren of London. His father was a tailor and an outspoken supporter of the Chartist movement. His father's parents had moved to Stanstead in the Eastern Townships of Lower Canada (Quebec) as pioneers in 1831. Daniel Fowler
Daniel Fowler (February 10, 1810 – September 14, 1894) was an English-born Canadian artist, writer and farmer. He is still considered one of Canada's finest artists working in watercolour. Biography The son of Daniel Fowler and Mary Ann Pope, he was born in Camberwell and grew up in the village of Downe. He was educated at schools in Camberwell and Walthamstow. He articled in law at the Doctors' Commons but abandoned law for art following his father's death in 1829. From 1831 to 1833, he studied with James Duffield Harding. By 1832, he was giving lessons in drawing. During a tour of the Alps in 1834-35, he contracted smallpox and convalesced in Rome. He returned to London, resuming teaching and painting; Fowler exhibited his work at the Society of British Artists and the Royal Academy of Arts.
