Royal Belgian Tennis Federation
The Royal Belgian Tennis Federation ( nl, Koninklijke Belgische Tennisbond; french: link=no, Fédération Royale Belge de Tennis) is an organisation set up in 1902 that formally takes charge of tennis in Belgium. From 1979 on, most tasks are executed by the tennis branches of the Flemish and Francophone Communities. The Belgian Federation is one of the 15 inaugural members of the International Tennis Federation. Its headquarters are located in the Brussels Capital Region, in the municipality of Ixelles. History On 23 March 1902 the Belgian Lawn Tennis League was founded by 12 tennis clubs. In 1914 the name was changed into Belgian Lawn Tennis Federation and in 1931 the predicate "Royal" was added. ( French, ) or (Dutch, ), is one of the 19 municipalities of the Brussels-Capital Region, Belgium. Located to the south-east of Brussels' city centre, it is geographically bisected by the City of Brussels. The Davis Cup is the premier international team event in men's tennis. It is run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and is contested annually between teams from competing countries in a knock-out format. It is described by the organisers as the "World Cup of Tennis", and the winners are referred to as the World Champion team. Pierre Geelhand De Merxem
Pierre Geelhand de Merxem (1910 – 1982) was a Belgian tennis player of the 1930s and 1940s. Geelhand was Belgium's national singles champion in 1938 and won a further 12 national titles in doubles. In 1946 he won through to the third round at Wimbledon, losing in four sets to Budge Patty. He was beaten in the third round of the 1948 French Championships by 15th-seed Marcello del Bello in five sets. Between 1936 and 1948 he featured in 14 Davis Cup ties for Belgium. He was non-playing captain of the Belgian sides which were Inter-Zonal finalists in 1953 and 1957. Hopman Cup
The Hopman Cup is an international eight-team indoor hardcourt tennis tournament that played mixed-gender teams on a country-by-country basis.It was held in Perth, Western Australia each year from 1989 to 2019, before being replaced on the calendar in 2020 by the now defunct ATP Cup. It is set to return in July 2023 in Nice, France. Format Unlike other major international team tennis tournaments such as the Davis Cup and the Fed Cup, which are for men or women only, the Hopman Cup is a mixed competition in which male and female players are on combined teams and represent their countries. The Billie Jean King Cup (or the BJK Cup) is the premier international team competition in women's tennis, launched as the Federation Cup in 1963 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the International Tennis Federation (ITF). The name was changed to the Fed Cup in 1995, and changed again in September 2020 in honor of former World No. 1 Billie Jean King. The Belgium men's national tennis team represents Belgium in Davis Cup tennis competition and are governed by the Royal Belgian Tennis Federation. Paul De Borman
Paul de Borman (; 1 December 1879 – 21 April 1948) was a Belgian tennis player who was active during the early part of the 20th century. He is regarded as a pioneer of Belgian tennis. From 1946 to 1947 he was president of the International Tennis Federation. De Borman was cofounder of the Royal Léopold Club in 1898. Between 1904 and 1919 he played in ten ties for the Belgian Davis Cup team, then called International Lawn Tennis Challenge. His best Davis Cup performance came in 1904 when, together with William le Maire de Warzée, they reached the final of the World Group in which they lost to the British Isles. That same year he reached the semifinal of the 1904 Wimbledon Championships in which he lost to Major Ritchie in straight sets. The International Tennis Federation (ITF) is the governing body of world tennis, wheelchair tennis, and beach tennis. It was founded in 1913 as the International Lawn Tennis Federation by twelve national tennis associations.
