Royal Artillery Gold Cup
The Royal Artillery Gold Cup is a National Hunt steeplechase in Britain which is open to horses aged six years or older. It is run at Sandown Park over a distance of about 3 miles (3 miles and 37 yards, or ) and during the race there are 22 fences to be jumped. It is scheduled to take place each year in February. The race was first run in 1863, took place at Sandown Park for the first time in 1878 and has been run there continuously since 1921. Runners in the race have to be owned or leased by serving or past members of the Royal Artillery and must be ridden by serving or past members of the British Armed Forces. A similar race, the Grand Military Gold Cup, takes place at Sandown Park in March. Captain Guy Disney's victory on Rathlin Rose in 2017 was the first race win by an amputee rider at a British racecourse. National Hunt racing in the UK is informally known as "jumps" and is divided into two major distinct branches: hurdles and steeplechases. Alongside these there are "bumpers", which are National Hunt flat races. In a hurdles race, the horses jump over obstacles called hurdles; in a steeplechase the horses jump over a variety of obstacles that can include plain fences, water jump or an open ditch. In the UK the biggest National Hunt events of the year are generally considered to be the Grand National and the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Andrew Matthews Balding (born 29 December 1972) is a British racehorse trainer based at Park House Stables, Kingsclere, near Newbury, Berkshire. Balding attended Caldicott School, a boys' preparatory school, and Radley College, a public school. He became a licensed trainer in January 2003, when he succeeded his father Ian Balding. His elder sister is Clare Balding. David Pipe (racehorse Trainer)
David Pipe (born 7 February 1973) is a horse racing trainer based in Somerset. He is the son of 15 time champion trainer Martin Pipe. Early career Pipe started riding in point to points in 1992 and scored 22 wins in 5 seasons, and 2 under rules - including on Bonanza Boy in the Ludlow Gold Cup. After retiring from the saddle he would begin learning the training craft across the globe spending time with Michael Dickinson, Criquette Head-Maarek and Joey Ramsden. Wincanton Racecourse is a thoroughbred horse racing venue located in Wincanton, Somerset, England. The steeplechase fences are large, making it a good test of a chaser. Three fences in quick succession in the second half of the home-straight make for exciting racing and often change the complexion of a finish dramatically; resulting in a great many close finishes. The track stages several big races, including the Kingwell Hurdle in February.
