Roy Williams (Scouting)
Roy Williams (born 1944) is the former Chief Scout Executive of the Boy Scouts of America. He is the tenth person to hold that position, serving between 2000–2007. Scouting career Selected in the spring of 2000 as Chief Scout Executive, Roy Williams began his career with the Boy Scouts of America as a district executive in Fort Worth, Texas. Following that, Williams served as district executive in Abilene, Texas, finance director in Little Rock, Arkansas, Scout Executive for the Jayhawk Area Council in Topeka, Kansas, and later the Narragansett Council in Providence, Rhode Island. He has also served as director of the Boy Scout Division, BSA National Council and most recently, Western region director. 2005 National Scout Jamboree
The 2005 National Scout Jamboree was the 16th national Scout jamboree of the Boy Scouts of America and was held from July 25, 2005 through August 3, 2005 at Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia. Normally, the next jamboree would be held four years afterward in 2009, but the date was changed so that the next jamboree could take place in 2010, the centennial anniversary of Scouting in the United States. Statistics * Over 31,700 Youth attended, making up the 883 jamboree Troops present. * Scouts from 26 Nations attended. * More than 7,000 adults volunteered to provide support and program services. * Each jamboree troop was made up of 36 youth, consisting of 4 patrols of 8 scouts, and 4 youth leaders (senior patrol leader, assistant senior patrol leader, quartermaster and scribe) selected from various units in their local council. * For the 10-day event Caroline County went from the 50th most populated county in Virginia to the 14th. Order Of The Arrow
The Order of the Arrow (OA) is the honor society of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), composed of Scouts and Scouters who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives as elected by their peers. The society was created by E. Urner Goodman, with the assistance of Carroll A. Edson, in 1915 as a means of reinforcing the Scout Oath and the Scout Law. It uses imagery commonly associated with American Indian cultures for its self-invented ceremonies. These ceremonies are usually for recognition of leadership qualities, camping skills, and other scouting ideals as exemplified by their elected peers. Influenced by Scout camp customs, the OA uses "safeguarded" (privy only to members) symbols, handshakes, and private rituals to impart a sense of community. Vigil Honor
It is important to distinguish between ''awards,'' ''honors,'' and ''membership levels'' in the Order of the Arrow – the honor camping society of the Boy Scouts of America. The Founder's Award, the Red Arrow Award, and the Distinguished Service Award are all ''awards''. Any of the awards of the Order of the Arrow (OA) may be presented to an individual regardless of which membership level they have achieved. Tribe Of Mic-O-Say
The Tribe of Mic-O-Say is an honor society used by two local councils of the Boy Scouts of America, the Heart of America Council at the H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation and, the council in which Mic-O-Say was founded in, the Pony Express Council at Camp Geiger. Similar programs exist or have existed in multiple other councils as well. The Tribe of Mic-O-Say is not a program of the National Council of the BSA. Mic-O-Say's ceremonies, customs, and traditions are loosely based on the folklore of various tribes of Native Americans. Both councils use both the Tribe of Mic-O-Say and the Order of the Arrow. The Kansas City Chiefs NFL team was named by Bartle, while he was mayor there, from his nickname as founder of Mic-O-Say.
