Roy Parkinson
Roy Philip Parkinson (3 June 1901 – 9 May 1945) was an Australian artist, known for his watercolour paintings. His works are collected in a number of Australian galleries. Early life Roy Parkinson was born in Brisbane, Queensland on 3 June 1901 to parents Cyril Parkinson and his wife Jane Silcock. He studied at Brisbane State High School and later studied art at the Brisbane Central Technical College under F. J. Martyn Roberts. He also took lessons from William Bustard and Hubert Jarvis. Parkinson exhibited his work in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne and travelled to Victoria to take in different subjects for his paintings. At an exhibition in 1930, 49 of his works were sold, a record for sales at a private exhibition at that point. One of his works was submitted to the Coronation Exhibition in London in 1937, along with other significant Queensland artists of the period, including Vida Lahey. Brisbane Central Technical College
Brisbane Central Technical College is a heritage-listed technical college at 2 George Street, Brisbane City, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was built from 1911 to 1956. It became the Queensland Institute of Technology (QIT) in 1965, and then in 1987 that became the Queensland University of Technology (QUT 1987 to present). It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 27 August 1999. The College was founded in 1908, and eventually became the Queensland Institute of Technology. While not able to grant bachelor's degrees, the college was able to issue diplomas which gave the recipients the right to "letters" after their name. William Bustard
William Bustard (1894–1973) was an artist in Queensland, Australia. His stained glass work features in many heritage-listed buildings. Early life William Bustard was born in 1894 in Terrington, Malton, Yorkshire, England. Living close to the York Minster, he was influenced by its stained glass work and music. He studied at the Scarborough Art School and won a scholarship to the Slade School of Fine Art in London. He served in the British army in World War I and contracted tuberculosis. He immigrated in 1921 to Queensland, Australia where his health recovered. Career In order to make a living, he undertook a range of artistic work, including teaching and commissions. He illustrated books, including Robinson Crusoe (1949) and Treasure Island (1956). Vida Lahey
Frances Vida Lahey MBE (1882—1968) was a prominent artist in Queensland, Australia. She exhibited widely from 1902 until 1965. Early life Frances Vida Lahey was born on 26 August 1882 at Pimpama, Queensland, the daughter of David Lahey and his wife, Jane Jemima, (née Walmsley). She had eleven siblings including conservationist Romeo Lahey. She attended Goytelea School at Southport. She studied painting at the Brisbane Central Technical College under Godfrey Rivers. Her uncle financed a trip to New Zealand in 1902 which inspired some of her earliest exhibited works, as well as helping to set her up to study in Melbourne. She studied at the National Gallery School, Melbourne under Bernard Hall and Frederick McCubbin in 1905 and again in 1909. Royal Queensland Art Society
The Royal Queensland Art Society is an organisation for practicing artists and those who appreciate art in Queensland, Australia. It is the oldest art society in Queensland. History A meeting was held in the Brisbane School of Arts on Thursday 4 August 1887 to propose the establishment of an art society in Queensland to be called the Queensland Art Society. It had nine initial members. The Queensland Premier Samuel Griffith was the inaugural president and Edgar Walker was the vice-president. Other members included artists Isaac Walter Jenner, Oscar Fristrom and Louis Wilhelm Carl Wirth. The society held its first annual art exhibition in August 1888 at the Masonic Hall in Alice Street in conjunction with the Brisbane Exhibition. Castlemaine Art Museum
Castlemaine Art Museum is an Australian art gallery and museum in Castlemaine, Victoria in the Shire of Mount Alexander. It was founded in 1913. It is housed in a 1931 Art Deco neo-classical building constructed for the purpose, heritage-listed by the National Trust. Its collection concentrates on Australian art and the museum houses historical artefacts and displays drawn from the district. The Museum is governed by private trustees and managed by a board elected by subscribers and provided with state and local government funding and support from benefactors, local families, artists and patrons.
