Roy Eriksen
Professor Roy T. Eriksen (8 October 1948 – 22 April 2019) was a Norwegian Renaissance scholar and Marlowe scholar teaching at the University of Agder. Education and Employment Roy T. Eriksen studied at the University of Oslo with Maren-Sofie Røstvig. He wrote his Ph.D thesis on a structural analysis of Christopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus. The University of Agder ( no, Universitetet i Agder), formerly known as Agder College and Agder University College, is a public university with campuses in Kristiansand and Grimstad, Norway. The institution was established as a university college (''høgskole'') in 1994 through the merger of the Agder University College and five other colleges, including a technical college and a nursing school, and was granted the status of a full university in 2007. Maren-Sofie Røstvig
Maren-Sofie Røstvig (27 March 1920 – 24 January 2014) was a Norwegian literary historian. Her doctoral thesis from 1950 treated English poetry from the 17th century. Early life and World War II She was born in Melbu in Hadsel, a daughter of Olaf Røstvig and Sigrid Elise Larsen. Røstvig was a student during the German occupation of Norway, and took part in the civil resistance. She was arrested in October 1943, and was incarcerated in Bredtveit Prison for about six weeks. From August 1944 to May 1945 she published the illegal weekly newspaper ''Frihet og fred'' (34 issues), along with two other women. Career Røstvig obtained a doctorate in historical treatise on English poetry in the 17th-century from the University of California. Her treatise was later expanded and published as the first volume of ''The Happy Man'' (1954). The second volume, which covers the 1700s, was published in 1958. ''The Tragical History of the Life and Death of Doctor Faustus'', commonly referred to simply as ''Doctor Faustus'', is an Elizabethan tragedy by Christopher Marlowe, based on German stories about the title character Faust. It was probably written in 1592 or 1593, shortly before Marlowe's death. Two different versions of the play were published in the Jacobean era several years later. Performance The Admiral's Men performed 24 times in the three years between October 1594 and October 1597. On 22 November 1602, the diary of Philip Henslowe recorded a £4 payment to Samuel Rowley and William Bird for additions to the play, which suggests a revival soon after that date. The powerful effect of the early productions is indicated by the legends that quickly accrued around them. Toril Swan (19 October 1945 – 13 September 2022) was a Norwegian linguist. She was born in Sandnessjøen. After taking a bachelor's degree in philosophy at Bates College in 1970, she graduated with the cand.philol. degree from the University of Oslo in 1978.
