Roy Ellam
Roy Ellam (born 13 January 1943) is an English former professional association football, footballer who played as a defender (association football), centre half in the Football League for three West Yorkshire teams, Bradford City A.F.C., Bradford City, Huddersfield Town A.F.C., Huddersfield Town and Leeds United F.C., Leeds United, during the 1960s and 1970s. Born in Hemsworth, Ellam started his career at Bradford City before joining Huddersfield Town, then Leeds United, before returning to Huddersfield. Leeds won the First Division during his time at the club but he only contributed 4 appearances during the campaign. He then played in the North American Soccer League (1968-1984), North American Soccer League for Philadelphia Atoms and Washington Diplomats before returning to non-league football in England with Mossley A.F.C., Mossley, where he scored twice in 83 appearances, and Gainsborough Trinity F.C., Gainsborough Trinity, where he was manager. Non-League football describes football leagues played outside the top leagues of a country. Usually, it describes leagues which are not fully professional. The term is primarily used for football in England, where it is specifically used to describe all football played at levels below those of the Premier League (20 clubs) and the three divisions of the English Football League (EFL; 72 clubs). The Washington Diplomats are an American soccer club representing Washington, D.C. Throughout their playing existence, the club played their home games at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium and indoor home matches at the neighboring D.C. Armory. Founded as an expansion franchise in 1974, the Diplomats competed in the now-defunct North American Soccer League, then the top-tier soccer league of the American soccer pyramid. Plagued with mediocrity in their first few seasons of existence, the Diplomats did not qualify for the playoffs until 1976, their third year in the league.
