Roxy Theatre (Saskatoon)
The Roxy Theatre is a movie theatre (cinema) in the Riversdale neighborhood of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, built during the onset of the Great Depression. The interior is decorated in a Spanish Villa style with the walls covered with small balconies, windows and towers, giving the impression of a quaint Spanish village. The ceiling was painted dark blue, with twinkling lights set in the plaster, to give the impression of a night sky. It was built for sound pictures ("talkies"), and was Saskatoon's first air-conditioned building. It is one of the last remaining atmospheric movie palaces in Canada. Naming, history The New York Roxy, the largest cinema ever built in North America (demolished in 1960), was named after its manager, noted radio personality and impresario "Roxy" Rothafel. The Roxy Theater is a former movie theater located at 1527 Washington Avenue in Miami Beach, Florida. In 1994, the Roxy was converted into an adult nightclub and renamed Club Madonna. It is owned and operated by theater and nightclub proprietor and former Broadway theater producer Leroy Griffith. The Roxy Theatre was a 5,920 seat movie palace at 153 West 50th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues, just off Times Square in New York City. It was one of the largest movie theatres ever built in North America. It opened on March 11, 1927 with the silent film ''The Love of Sunya'' starring Gloria Swanson. It was a leading Broadway film showcase through the 1950s and also noted for its lavish stage shows. It closed and was demolished in 1960. The Roxy Theatre was a movie palace in Atlanta, Georgia. It was notable for showcasing the original Atlanta runs of such films as ''Spartacus'', the 1962 ''The Music Man'', the Technicolor ''Mutiny on the Bounty'' with Marlon Brando, and ''My Fair Lady''. It was torn down in 1972 to make way for the Westin Peachtree Plaza, the hotel that was prominently featured in the 1981 film ''Sharky's Machine''. The Roxy Theatre (often just the Roxy) is a nightclub on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, California, owned by Lou Adler and his son, Nic. Roxy Theatre was the final name of a theatre that operated from 1935 to 2006 at 1215 Danforth Avenue, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada's east end. It was designed by the architectural firm Kaplan & Sprachman, which designed dozens of neighbourhood cinemas, and opened under the name ''Allenby Theatre''. In the 1930s the Allenby allowed neighbourhood children to enroll in the Popeye Club, where they could watch a double bill, and two episodes of the popeye cartoon serials, for ten cents. During the 1970s, the theatre was run by Gary Topp and Jeff Silverman, reported to have introduced midnight screenings to Toronto.
