Rowrah And Kelton Fell Railway
The Rowrah and Kelton Fell Railway was a standard gauge mineral railway in Cumberland, England, which was operated by William Baird and Company of Glasgow, Scotland. It opened in 1877 and closed in 1926. Route The line ran south from Rowrah to Sheriff Gate where it branched into three. One line ran south-west to Salter Hall Quarry; a second ran south to Stockhow; a third ran east to Kirkland, for Bankstead mine. The Kirkland branch continued east to Kelton Fell and Knockmurton mines. There were junctions with both the Whitehaven, Cleator and Egremont Railway and the Cleator and Workington Junction Railway near Rowrah. Locomotives Closure Knockmurton mine closed about 1920; Bankstead mine closed 1921; Salter Hall quarry and the railway closed 1926. The track was lifted in 1934. Cleator is a village in the English county of Cumbria and within the boundaries of the historic county of Cumberland. Cleator is 1½ miles south of the town of Cleator Moor on the A5086 road. Cleator was the original village, Cleator Moor being the moor above the village. It is the site of the former Kangol hat factory. The factory buildings and shop are now closed. Cleator is located on the River Ehen, which is joined by the River Keekle at Longlands Lake. On Thursday 19 November 2009, rainfall of over 300 mm was recorded in Cumbria. The surge of water off the fells of the Lake District flowed back to the Irish Sea down the rivers of West Cumbria, including the River Derwent which caused flooding and damage at Keswick, Cockermouth and Workington. Arlecdon railway station served the village of Arlecdon in the former English county of Cumberland, now part of Cumbria. Location The station was the southern passenger terminus of the Cleator and Workington Junction Railway's (C&WJR) otherwise mineral branch which left the company's to main line at Rowrah Branch Junction south of Distington. The , single track branch opened for mineral traffic on 1 May 1882 and was known locally as "Baird's Line" and officially as the Rowrah Branch. Rowrah railway station was built by the Whitehaven, Cleator and Egremont Railway. It served the village of Rowrah, Cumbria, England. Local lines Rowrah was connected by three separate railway companies: * The Whitehaven, Cleator and Egremont Railway curving southwest to north through the station. * "Baird's Line" - a branch of the Cleator and Workington Junction Railway arriving at Rowrah from the northwest, and * The Rowrah and Kelton Fell Railway which conveyed minerals from mines in the hills to the southeast. Moor Row
Moor Row is a village in Cumbria, North West England. It is in Egremont civil parish and lies on a minor road off the A595, south-east of Whitehaven. In 2018 it had an estimated population of 759. Moor Row is a residential community on Cumbria's coastal plain. The history of Moor Row goes back to at least 1762, but it was the 19th century discovery of iron ore in the vicinity that built the 'row of houses on a moor'. Cornish tin miners moved here to work the mines, and their presence is noted in a number of street names such as Penzance Street. Another street, Dalzell, is named after Thomas Henry Dalzell, a mine owner. Houses The village name probably refers to the Scalegill street houses, which are noted on an 1860 Ordnance Survey map. Manning Wardle was a steam locomotive manufacturer based in Hunslet, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. Cleator And Workington Junction Railway
The Cleator & Workington Junction Railway (C&WJR) was located in West Cumberland in Northern England, serving the towns of Cleator Moor and Workington and intermediate villages. It was mainly used for coal, limestone and iron ore traffic for the local industries. History The Cleator & Workington Junction Railway was incorporated in 1876 and a Bill presented to Parliament in the same year. Construction began shortly after and the line between Workington and Cleator Moor was opened in 1879.
