Rowing At The 2016 Summer Paralympics
Rowing competitions at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio were held from 9 to 11 September 2016, at Lagoa Stadium at the Games' Copacabana hub. Classification Rowers are given a classification depending on the type and extent of their disability. The classification system allows rowers to compete against others with a similar level of function. The three rowing classes are: *LTA (Legs, Trunk and Arms) - Mixed coxed fours *TA (Trunk and Arms) - Mixed double sculls *AS (Arms and shoulders) - Men's and women's singles Events Four rowing events are scheduled to be held, each over a course of 1000 metres: *Men's single sculls AS *Women's single sculls AS *Mixed double sculls TA *Mixed four coxed LTA Qualification Ninety-six athletes (48 male, 48 female) are expected to take part in this sport. Lagoa Rodrigo De Freitas
Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon (Portuguese: ''Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas'') is a lagoon in the district of Lagoa in the Zona Sul (South Zone) area of Rio de Janeiro. The lagoon is connected to the Atlantic Ocean, allowing sea water to enter by a canal along the edge of a park locally known as Jardim de Alah. Lauren Rowles
Lauren Rachel Catherine Rowles, (born 24 April 1998) is a British parasport rower and former wheelchair athlete. She won gold with Laurence Whiteley in the trunk-arms mixed double sculls (TAMix2x) at the 2016 Summer Paralympics.The pair repeated their achievement in Tokyo at the 2021 Summer Paralympics. Background Rowles, who is from Cofton Hackett, Bromsgrove District, attended North Bromsgrove High School. At the age of 13 she suddenly developed transverse myelitis (a condition in which the spinal cord is inflamed), which left her with no feeling below her chest. She decided to take up Paralympic sport while watching coverage of the 2012 Summer Paralympics during a stay in Stoke Mandeville Spinal Injuries Unit. James Fox MBE (born 2 May 1992) is a British Paralympic rower who is a five time World champion and a Paralympic champion in the mixed coxed four Paralympic events. Pam Relph
Pamela Lillian Relph MBE (born 14 November 1989) is a British adaptive rower who won gold medals at the 2012 and 2016 Summer Paralympics, thus becoming the first double gold medallist in Paralympic rowing. Personal life Relph was born on 14 November 1989 in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, England. She attended John Colet School, in Wendover, Buckinghamshire, who have named one of their tutor houses after her. She attended the Welbeck Defence Sixth Form College on an Army scholarship and planned to join the Royal Engineers as an Engineering Officer. Her army career was ended by arthritis. Daniel Brown (rower)
Daniel Brown MBE (born 29 November 1982) is a retired British pararower who competed at international-level events. He is a Paralympic champion, a triple world champion and a double world cup champion in the mixed coxed four with Grace Clough, Pam Relph, James Fox and Oliver James. Brown was a keen football and rugby league player when he was in his teenage years and played for Wokingham. He was involved in a car accident in 2003 which caused him to have life-changing injuries: he couldn't put weight on his ankle and he severed nerves in his left arm. Grace Elizabeth Sorrel Clough (born 21 June 1991) is a former British Paralympic rower who competed in the mixed coxed four event. She won multiple gold medals at the World Rowing Championships and World Rowing Cup alongside a gold at the 2016 Summer Paralympics. Clough was inducted into the Sheffield Legends Walk of Fame in 2016 and named a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2017.
