Rowing At The 1986 Commonwealth Games
The 1986 Commonwealth Games ( gd, Geamannan a 'Cho-fhlaitheis 1986) were held in Edinburgh, Scotland, between 24 July and 2 August 1986. They were the second Games to be held in Edinburgh. Thirty two of the eligible fifty nine countries (largely African, Asian and Caribbean states) boycotted the event because of the Thatcher government's policy of keeping Britain's sporting links with apartheid South Africa. Organisation Unlike the 1970 Games in Edinburgh, which were popular and successful, the 1986 Games are ill-famed for the wide political boycott connected with them and the resulting financial mismanagement. Controversies In addition to the boycott, further controversy arose when it was revealed that through this much-reduced participation and the resultant decline in anticipated broadcasting and sponsorship revenues, the Organising Committee was facing a big financial black hole. Holyrood Park
Holyrood Park (also called the Queen's Park or King's Park depending on the reigning monarch's gender) is a royal park in central Edinburgh, Scotland about to the east of Edinburgh Castle. It is open to the public. It has an array of hills, lochs, glens, ridges, basalt cliffs, and patches of gorse, providing a wild piece of highland landscape within its area. The park is associated with the royal palace of Holyroodhouse and was formerly a 12th-century royal hunting estate. The park was created in 1541 when James V had the ground "circulit about Arthurs Sett, Salisborie and Duddingston craggis" enclosed by a stone wall. Arthur's Seat, an extinct volcano and the highest point in Edinburgh, is at the centre of the park, with the cliffs of Salisbury Crags to the west. John Patrick Lyon MBE (born 9 March 1962) is a retired boxer from Great Britain. Boxing career A member of the Greenall St. Helens Amateur Boxing Club he competed at the 1984 Summer Olympics and 1988 Summer Olympics. He represented England and won a silver medal in the light flyweight division, at the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Four years later he represented England again and won a gold medal in the men's flyweight division (– 48 kg), at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Scotland. He appeared at a third consecutive games in 1990. Lyon won eight English ABA titles, four flyweight and four light-flyweight and a bronze medal in the 1991 Acropolis Cup, retiring immediately afterwards.
