Routt County is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of the 2020 United States Census, 2020 census, the population was 24,829. The county seat is Steamboat Springs, Colorado, Steamboat Springs. Routt County comprises the Steamboat Springs, CO Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Placer gold was found near Hahns Peak in 1864 as part of the Colorado Gold Rush.Voynick, S.M., 1992, Colorado Gold, Missoula: Mountain Press Publishing Company, Routt County was created out of the western portion of Grand County, Colorado, Grand County on January 29, 1877. It was named in honor of John Long Routt, the last territorial and first state governor of Colorado. John Long Routt
John Long Routt (April 25, 1826 – August 13, 1907) was an Americans, American politician of the Republican Party. Born in Eddyville, Kentucky, he served as the List of governors of Colorado, first and seventh governor of Colorado from 1876 to 1879 and 1891 to 1893. He also served as mayor of Denver, Colorado from 1883 to 1885. He died in Denver, Colorado. Early years John Long Routt was born in Eddyville, Kentucky, and moved to Bloomington, Illinois shortly thereafter where he completed his public school education. Upon completion of his studies, he worked as a carpenter prior to entering elected office. While living in Illinois, he attained his first elected office as Sheriff of McLean County, Illinois. Routt's blossoming public service career was abruptly interrupted by service in the American Civil War, during which acted as a captain in the 94th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. Rio Blanco County is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of the 2020 census, the population was 6,529. The county seat is Meeker. The name of the county is the Spanish language name for the White River which runs through it. History Rio Blanco County was created on March 25, 1889, when it was split from Garfield County. The town of Meeker became the county seat. On May 17, 1973, Rio Blanco County became one of two counties in Colorado to have a peaceful nuclear explosion as a part of Operation Plowshare. Steamboat Lake State Park
Steamboat Lake State Park is a Colorado state park located in Routt County north of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and near the community of Hahns Peak Village. The park, established west of Hahns Peak in 1967, includes a reservoir. Park facilities include a visitors center, marina, boat ramps, campsites, cabins, picnic sites and of hiking trails. Stagecoach, Colorado
Stagecoach was a short-lived ski resort in Colorado in the early 1970s, located south of Steamboat Springs in Routt County. Ski area The ski area was developed by the Woodmoor Company of Colorado Springs. Although full of great terrain on north-facing slopes, financial problems of the developer nixed the project in 1973 and it closed after its second season of skiing in 1974. Now considered a "lost" ski hill, rumors of Stagecoach reopening are common, but are always denied by the Wittemyer family, who have owned the property for over twenty-five years. State Highway 134 (SH 134) is a long state highway in northern Colorado. SH 134's western terminus is at SH 131 in Toponas, and the eastern terminus is at U.S. Route 40 (US 40) north of Kremmling. Route description SH 134 begins in the west at Toponas and proceeds eastward entering Routt National Forest after three miles (5 km). From there the road climbs gradually for roughly thirteen miles to an elevation of at Gore Pass. At Gore Pass the route moves into Arapaho National Forest through which it passes for roughly three miles before leaving National Forest Service land.
