Round Pond (foaled May 21, 2002) is a retired American Thoroughbred racehorse. A two-time Eclipse Award finalist, she is best known for winning the 2006 Breeders' Cup Distaff. Background Round Pond was bred in Kentucky by Trudy McCaffery & John Toffan. The bay filly is a daughter of 1998 Breeders' Cup Classic winner Awesome Again and the Trempolino mare Gift of Dance. Her damsire, the French-bred Trempolino, is best known for winning the 1987 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. John Servis, best known as the trainer of Kentucky Derby winner Smarty Jones, bought Round Pond for $105,000 as a yearling at the 2003 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, on behalf of Rick Porter. Awesome Again
Awesome Again (March 29, 1994December 15, 2020) was a Canadian Thoroughbred racehorse and stallion. As a three-year-old, he won the Queen's Plate in Canada and the Jim Dandy Stakes in the United States. He was undefeated at age four, scoring his biggest win in the Breeders' Cup Classic after winning the Stephen Foster Handicap, Saratoga Breeders' Cup Handicap, Hawthorne Gold Cup Handicap and Whitney Handicap. He was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2001. At stud, he was an important sire whose offspring include Ghostzapper, an American Horse of the Year. The Eclipse Award is an American Thoroughbred horse racing award named after the 18th-century British racehorse and sire, Eclipse. An Eclipse Award Trophy is presented to the winner in each division that is made by a few small selected American foundries with expertise in studio bronze casting. It is then mounted on the hand-crafted native Kentucky walnut base to comprise the Eclipse Award on which a brass plate recites the award winner. Smuggler (May 20, 2002 in Kentucky – April 16, 2015) was an American Champion Thoroughbred Horse racing, racing Mare (horse), mare. She was a homebred owned by Ogden Mills Phipps and trained by National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, U.S. Racing Hall of Fame trainer Claude "Shug" McGaughey. Smuggler had a short career on the race track but was a American Champion Three-Year-Old Filly, Champion. She had a record of 5 wins in 9 lifetime starts. Her biggest victories included wins in the (Grade 1) Mother Goose Stakes and (Grade 1) Coaching Club American Oaks, both at Belmont Park. Smuggler's mother is the Hall of Fame Champion Thoroughbred Inside Information (horse), Inside Information, and her sire was Champion Kentucky Derby winner Unbridled. Union Rags (foaled March 3, 2009 in Kentucky) is a champion American Thoroughbred racehorse who won the 2012 Belmont Stakes. He also won the Champagne Stakes and the Saratoga Special Stakes Background Union Rags is a bay with a white blaze sired by Dixie Union who won the Haskell Invitational Handicap in 2000 before becoming a successful stallion. His dam, Tempo, was a granddaughter of the 1000 Guineas winner Glad Rags. Union Rags was bred by Phyllis Mills Wyeth, 71 (in 2012), whose parents Alice du Pont and James Mills were prominent owners and breeders of Thoroughbreds. Barbaro (horse)
Barbaro (April 29, 2003 – January 29, 2007) was a champion American Thoroughbred racehorse who won the 2006 Kentucky Derby but shattered his leg two weeks later in the Preakness Stakes which ended his racing career and eventually led to the need to euthanize him. On May 20, 2006, Barbaro ran in the Preakness Stakes as a heavy favorite, but, after a false start, he fractured three bones in and around the fetlock of his right hind leg. The injury ruined any chance of a Triple Crown in 2006 and ended his racing career. The next day, he underwent surgery at the New Bolton Center at the University of Pennsylvania for his injuries. In July he developed laminitis in his left rear foot. Smarty Jones (February 28, 2001) is a champion Thoroughbred racehorse who won the 2004 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes and came second in the Belmont Stakes. Breeders' Cup Classic
The Breeders' Cup Classic is a Grade I Weight for Age thoroughbred horse race for 3-year-olds and older run at a distance of on dirt. It is held annually at a different racetrack as part of the Breeders' Cup World Championships in late October or early November.
