Round Mountain, Alabama
Round Mountain is an unincorporated community in Cherokee County, Alabama, United States. For a short period, it was an incorporated community beginning in 1908, and was listed in the 1910 U.S. Census as having 210 residents. That technically and briefly made it the largest town in Cherokee County, as neither the county seat of Centre nor Cedar Bluff returned census figures. History A post office called Round Mountain was established in 1873, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1960. The community was centered on the Round Mountain blast furnace. The furnace first opened in 1852 and averaged 11 tons of iron manufactured per week. It was the first furnace in Alabama to use red iron ore to produce iron. Round Mountain is a small summit made of gray hornblende plagioclase trachyte in the Castle Valley in southeastern Grand County, Utah, United States, about east-northeast of Moab. Round Mountain is an extinct bysmalith, or igneous volcanic plug, that rises above the middle of the valley floor. The Battle of Round Mountain was the first battle in the Trail of Blood on Ice campaign for the control of Indian Territory during the American Civil War that occurred on November 19, 1861. Its main purpose was to prevent Union supporters of the Creek Nation, led by Opothleyahola from fleeing Indian Territory to the protection of Union forces in Kansas. The physical location of the battle is in dispute. Some historians believe it to be near Keystone while others contend that it is near Yale, Oklahoma. The Round Mountain Gold Mine is an open pit gold mine in Round Mountain, Nevada. The mine is operated and owned by Kinross Gold. History Mining at Round Mountain occurred as early as 1906, using underground techniques. The mine produced 350,000 ounces of gold through underground mining over a sixty-year period, before converting to an open pit. In 2003 Kinross acquired 50% of the Round Mountain mine from Echo Bay Mines through a merger. In 2016, Kinross purchased the remaining 50% from Barrick Gold Corporation. Mica Peak is the name of two separate mountain summits in the United States located approximately apart; one in Spokane County, Washington and the other in Kootenai County, Idaho. The two peaks are located along the same ridge, which separates the Spokane Valley and Rathdrum Prairie from the Palouse. The mountains have an elevation difference of only and are the southernmost peaks of the Selkirk Mountains. Other summits located along the same ridge include the Round Mountain, the Cable Peak, the Shasta Butte, and the Blossom Mountain.
