Rotherham Local Elections
Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council is the local authority for Rotherham in South Yorkshire, England. The council is elected every four years. Since the last boundary changes in 2004, 63 councillors have been elected from 21 wards. As part of the government's response to the Rotherham sexual abuses scandal, the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Eric Pickles made an order under the Local Government Act 2000 to switch Rotherham council to holding all-out elections in 2016 and then every fourth year after (the boundaries were not changed). Until then, Rotherham was elected 'in thirds' like other Metropolitan Boroughs, with a third of the council being elected in 3 years out of every 4-year cycle. Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council is the local authority of the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham in South Yorkshire, England. It is a metropolitan district council, one of four in South Yorkshire and one of 36 in the metropolitan counties of England. The council was created by the Local Government Act 1972. In February 2015 the elected council had its powers suspended and transferred to commissioners appointed by HM Government after it was severely criticised by the Casey report into the Rotherham child sexual exploitation scandal. Power is being returned to the council in phases, with the council expected to fully regain its powers by March 2019. 2014 Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council Election
Election result A total of 67,970 votes were cast. There were 508 spoiled ballots. The turnout was 34.79% The 2014 Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council election took place on 22 May 2014 to elect members of Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council in England. This was on the same day as other local elections. A third of the seats was in play. The Councillors in this class were previously elected during the 2010 Rotherham Council election, in which Labour swept 19 out of 21 wards with 44% of the votes, thanks to the very divided opposition (Conservative, UKIP, BNP as well as Independents). This was the first election since the Rotherham child sexual exploitation scandal broke. Turnout declined to about half of its 2010 figure (down to 34.79%).
