Rotherham Swifts F.C. was an association football club from Kimberworth, near Rotherham, Yorkshire, England, active in the 19th century. History The first reference to the club is from July 1888, when a representative attended a meeting of 22 clubs to arrange fixtures before the 1888–89 season. The club had enough members to field two XIs on its first match weekend in September 1888 (helped by recruiting several players from Ecclesfield), the first XI losing at Eckington Works, and the second XI beating Junior Cup champions Carbrook Church at home. It also entered the FA Cup that season, although the competition now had qualifying rounds, and the Swifts were eliminated in the first qualifying round at Park Grange. The club finished its first season with a £3 profit on income of £110. Michael Whitham
Michael Whitham (6 November 1867 – 6 May 1924) was an English international footballer, who played as a right back. Born in Ecclesfield, Sheffield he played for both The Wednesday and Sheffield United where he spent seven years. Whitham gained one cap for England and went on to become a trainer at a number of clubs following his retirement from playing as well as a brief spell as manager of Gainsborough Trinity. Playing career Whitham started his career in and around the Sheffield area where he played semi-professionally for a number of clubs (often registered with more than one club during the same period as was allowed at the time.) After making one appearance for The Wednesday he turned fully professional and signed for Rotherham Swifts in 1889. The club were soon in financial trouble however and Whitham and two other players, Rab Howell and Arthur Watson were sold to newly formed Sheffield United in March 1890. Arthur Watson (footballer, Died 1931)
Arthur Watson (1870 – 3 June 1931) was an English footballer who played the majority of his career at Sheffield United as an inside left. Born in Ecclesfield in Sheffield, he also had spells at his local side Ecclesfield as well as Rotherham Swifts, West Bromwich Albion and Lincoln City. Playing career Watson started his career playing for his local team in his home parish of Ecclesfield. From there he transferred to Rotherham Swifts in the summer of 1889. The Swifts found themselves in financial difficulties over the course of the season and Watson was sold, along with fellow former Ecclesfield players Rab Howell and Michael Whitham, to recently formed Sheffield United in March 1890. Rab Howell
Rabbi "Rab" Howell (12 October 1869 – 21 July 1937) was a nineteenth-century professional footballer who played for Sheffield United and Liverpool primarily as a defender. Born in Wincobank in Sheffield, he was of Romani descent and was the first Romani to play for England, winning two caps. Club career Sheffield United Howell was a highly skilled player despite his small size (5 feet 5 inches or 1.65 metres), playing as a nippy half-back or inside right. He began his career with the Sheffield club Ecclesfield and also played for Rotherham Swifts before signing along with two other Swifts players, Arthur Watson and Michael Whitham for newly formed Sheffield United in March 1890. The Sheffield & District Football League was an English association football league based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, and surrounding area. History The league was founded in time for the 1889/90 season, being one of the first ever league competitions. The first season was not completed, with Kilnhurst becoming the first champions in 1891. Chesterfield Town, a forerunner of the present Chesterfield F.C, won the 1892 title, and Wednesday Wanderers, the reserve team of Sheffield Wednesday, lifted the shield in 1893. The 1893/94 competition saw the league split into two divisions of five, with the two group winners, Wednesday Wanderers and Mexborough, meeting in a play-off to decide the title winners, with the Mexburians winning the game 1-0 at Oakwell.
