Rotherham Main Colliery
Rotherham Main Colliery was situated in Canklow, about 0.5 miles south of Rotherham town centre in the Rother Valley. The area was the site of an ancient crossing of the river set below the crag on which were Canklow Woods, an ancient woodland area. History The first shaft was commenced in 1890 with the pit going into production in 1894. The owners of the colliery and later the coke ovens and by-products plant were Sheffield-based steel makers John Brown and Company who also built houses for their workers and a school for the children of the colliers. An accident occurred in 1891 when 8 miners fell from their wooden platform. The colliery had problems, the area was prone to flooding but prior to the First World War it employed around 2,000 miners. Following the General Strike in 1926 the colliery was virtually closed and needed just 300 employees to maintain it. Canklow
Canklow is a suburb of Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England. Canklow is less than south from Rotherham town centre and approximately north-east from Sheffield city centre. It forms part of the Boston Castle ward for the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham. History Canklow was created as a post Second World War council housing area. At the southern end of the estate there was once a coal mine, Rotherham Main Colliery. The mine opened in 1890 and closed in 1954. In 1981 the census revealed a male unemployment rate for Canklow of 42.1%, just under four times the national average. Manchester, Sheffield And Lincolnshire Railway
The Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway (MS&LR) was formed in 1847 when the Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester Railway joined with authorised but unbuilt railway companies, forming a proposed network from Manchester to Grimsby. It pursued a policy of expanding its area of influence, especially in reaching west to Liverpool, which it ultimately did through the medium of the Cheshire Lines Committee network in joint partnership with the Great Northern Railway and the Midland Railway. Its dominant traffic was minerals, chiefly coal, and the main market was in London and the south of England. It was dependent on other lines to convey traffic southward. The London and North Western Railway was an exceptionally hostile partner, and in later years the MS&LR allied itself with the Great Northern Railway.
