''Rothchild'' is a 1934 French comedy film directed by Marco de Gastyne and starring Harry Baur, Fred Pasquali and Paul Pauley. It was remade as a 1935 British film '' The Guv'nor'' starring George Arliss.Cook p.189 The film's sets were designed by the art director Guy de Gastyne. Synopsis Rothchild, a tramp, is assumed by a number of people to be a member of the famous banking family because of his surname. Marco De Gastyne
Marc Henri Benoist better known as Marco de Gastyne (born in Paris, France, on 15 July 1889; died in Paris on 8 November 1982) was a French painter, illustrator and later film director of more than fifteen films. After studying painting, he worked at la Villa Médicis from 1911 to 1913. He also became an illustrator for the French journal ''La Baïonnette''. Then he turned to cinema directing more than a dozen films between 1922 and 1962. His debut film co-directed with Franz Toussaint was ''Inch'Allah'' in 1922. His most known film is ''La Merveilleuse Vie de Jeanne d'Arc'' which he directed in 1929. He discovered Dalida and promoted her in his film ''Le Masque de Toutankhamon'' in 1954. Personal life He was the son of French writer Jules Benoist, better known by his literary name Jules de Gastyne and his brother was the chief designer Guy de Gastyne. Philippe Hériat
Philippe Hériat (15 September 1898 in Paris – 10 October 1971) was a multi-talented French novelist, playwright and actor. Biography Born Raymond Gérard Payelle, he studied with film director René Clair and in 1920 made his debut in silent film. Over the next fifteen years, he appeared in secondary roles in another twenty-five films including the 1927 Abel Gance masterpiece, ''Napoleon''. In 1949 Hériat collaborated with film director Jean Delannoy to write the screenplay for the film '' Le Secret de Mayerling''. Philippe Hériat won the 1931 Prix Renaudot for his book ''L'Innocent''. In 1939 he won the Prix Goncourt for ''Les Enfants gâtés'', and the 1947 Grand Prix du roman de l'Académie française for ''Famille Boussardel''. In 1949 he was made a member of the Académie Goncourt, a position he held until his death in 1971. Hériat is buried in Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.
