Rotermanni Quarter
Rotermanni Quarter is an area in the downtown of Tallinn, Estonia. It is located between Tallinn Old Town, the Port of Tallinn and Viru Square. This area has played an important role in Tallinn's history; in the 19th century it was the crossing of roads from Tartu, Narva and Pärnu. There were also other big industrial companies in the area. The developer of the quarter is Rotermann City OÜ (founded by Urmas Sõõrumaa). Over the years they have been working together with architectural bureaus Kosmos (Mihkel Tüür, Villem Tomiste, Ott Kadarik), KOKO Architects (Andrus Kõresaar, Raivo Kotov), Alver Architects ( Andres Alver, Indrek Rünkla), Teigar Sova Architects ( Vahur Sova), HG Architecture (Hanno Grossschmidt, Tomomi Hayashi) and Emil Urbel Architectural Bureau. European Union Prize For Contemporary Architecture
The European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award is a prize given biennially by the European Union and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe, Barcelona, 'to acknowledge and reward quality architectural production in Europe'. The Prize was created in 1987 through an equal partnership among the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe. The award is open to all the works completed in Europe within the two-year period before the granting of the prize. Nominations are submitted by independent experts, the national architecture associations and the advisory committee of the Prize, and then evaluated by a jury organized for each cycle. Emil Urbel
Emil Urbel (born 13 November 1959 in Pärnu) is an Estonian architect. Emil Urbel studied in the State Art Institute of the Estonian SSR (today's Estonian Academy of Arts) in the department of architecture. He graduated from the institute in 1982. From 1984 to 1989 Emil Urbel worked in the state design bureau Eesti Projekt (Estonian National Design). From 1989 to 2000 he worked in the architectural bureau Urbel&Peil OÜ. Tomomi Hayashi (林 知充、born February 1, 1971, in Toyama, Japan) is a Japanese- Estonian architect. From 1990 to 1994 Tomomi Hayashi studied in the Yokohama National University (横浜国立大学 ''Yokohama Kokuritsu Daigaku'') in the department of architecture. Hanno Grossschmidt (born 7 October 1973) is an Estonian architect. From 1980 to 1991, Hanno Grossschmidt studied in the 7th Secondary School of Tallinn. Andres Alver (born 23 December 1953) is an Estonian architect. Born in Tartu, from 1961 to 1972, Alver studied in the 2nd Secondary School of Tartu (today's Miina Härma Gymnasium). Villem Tomiste (born 8 August 1975 in Tallinn) is an Estonian architect. He graduated from high school in 1993 Tallinna Liivalaia Gümnaasium. Tomiste was enrolled as a student of the Tallinn University of Technology the same year. The architectural degree was acquired in Estonian Academy of Arts from 1994 to 2000.
