Rotation (film)
''Rotation'' is a 1949 East German drama film directed by Wolfgang Staudte and starring Paul Esser, Irene Korb and Werner Peters. It was produced under the auspices of the DEFA film studio in East Germany. It began filming on 29 September 1948 and premiered in theaters on 16 September 1949. The film was partly shot at the Althoff Studios in Potsdam. The art directors Willy Schiller and Arthur Schwarz worked on the film's sets. Plot The film opens to scenes of Berlin during World War II, with the ongoing war depicted by bombs and explosions, both onscreen and in the background soundtrack. The film then jumps back twenty years in time, and, through a series of vignettes about worker Hans Behnke, traces the way in which a typical worker who opposes Nazi party ideology could be drawn into complying and cooperating with the Nazi regime. Wolfgang Staudte
Wolfgang Staudte (9 October 1906 – 19 January 1984), born Georg Friedrich Staudte, was a German film director, script writer and actor. He was born in Saarbrücken. After 1945, Staudte also looked at German guilt in the cinema. Alongside Helmut Käutner, he was considered the only German post-war director of any standing who, after 1945, could look back on continuous artistic filmmaking far removed from Heimatfilm and the suppression of history. Staudte's films stood for politically committed cinema as well as for professional craftsmanship, for film art and (good) entertainment with a social claim. His most important work came in the ten years following World War II, in which he worked with the DEFA in East Germany. The main focus of his work was to highlight the limits of German national pride. East German Films
This is a list, in year order, of the most notable films produced in the Soviet Occupation Zone of Germany and the socialist German Democratic Republic (GDR, East Germany) from 1945 until German Reunification in October 1990. The state owned East German film company DEFA produced about 800 feature films between 1946 and 1992. Besides DEFA, the state broadcaster DFF and the Deutsche Hochschule für Filmkunst (now the Filmuniversität Babelsberg) were the only other organizations in the GDR that produced feature films for cinematic release, although far fewer than DEFA. DEFA also produced about 750 animated movies and more than 2500 documentaries and short films. Valeska Stock (1887–1966) was a German actress who appeared in around thirty films in supporting roles. Stock originally trained as a ballet dancer in her native Breslau, before moving into theatre and then into the film industry. Brigitte Krause (1929–2007) was a German actress who from 1948 was trained at the East German DEFA studios in Berlin. While still a student, in 1949 she made her debut as Christel in Kurt Maetzig's film ''Girls in Gingham''. She went on to take roles in several other feature films but also appeared on television until the late 1980s, both in series and as an entertainer. Reinhold Bernt
Reinhold Bernt (19 December 1902 – 26 October 1981) was a German film actor. Bernt was born Reinhold Bienert in Berlin and died in West Berlin. Career Bernt's acting career began in Stuttgart with a theater debut. Soon after, he traveled to Berlin. There, he founded a troupe known as the "Group of Young Actors" with his brother, Gerhard Bernt. He performed across Berlin and entered the film industry in the 1930s. he was not only an actor, but also an assistant director and screenwriter. He appeared in some Nationalist Socialist propaganda films, such as ''Im Namen des Volkes'' (In the Name of the People). After World War II, he performed at the Schillertheater and in Deutsche Film-Aktiengesellschaft (DEFA). It became harder to obtain large roles, so he began to act increasingly as supporting characters. eventually, he moved on to voicing radio plays, performing a total of 320 roles.
