''Rosshalde'' is a short novel by the German author Hermann Hesse Hermann Karl Hesse (; 2 July 1877 – 9 August 1962) was a German-Swiss poet, novelist, and painter. His best-known works include ''Demian'', ''Steppenwolf (novel), Steppenwolf'', ''Siddhartha (novel), Siddhartha'', and ''The Glass Bead Game'', .... Summary ''Rosshalde'' deals with the failed marriage of the protagonist, painter Johann Veraguth and his wife Adele. The couple has two sons. The elder son moved away for college, and their younger son, Pierre, lives with them on their estate, Rosshalde. The couple, however, do not live together; Adele lives in the main house with Pierre, while Johann lives in a small house next to them. Hermann Karl Hesse (; 2 July 1877 – 9 August 1962) was a German-Swiss poet, novelist, and painter. Life and work Family background Hermann Karl Hesse was born on 2 July 1877 in the Black Forest town of Calw in Kingdom of Württemberg, Württemberg, German Empire. His grandparents served in India at a mission under the auspices of the Basel Mission, a Protestant Christian missionary society. His grandfather Hermann Gundert compiled a Malayalam grammar and a Malayalam-English dictionary, and also contributed to a translation of the Bible into Malayalam in South India.
