Rossa Ryan
Rossa Ryan (born July 2000) is a Group 1 winning Irish jockey who competes in flat racing and is based in Britain. He was the British All-Weather Champion Jockey of the 2023-24 season. Background Ryan grew up in Ballinderry, near Tuam in County Galway, where his father David Ryan has a National Hunt training yard. He was a champion rider on the pony racing circuit in Ireland, riding 150 winners, before taking out an apprentice licence. He rode his first winner under rules on 9 December 2016 on Solar Heat at Dundalk. In January 2017 he moved to England to be an apprentice at the yard of Richard Hannon. Career Ryan finished second to Jason Watson in the 2018 British apprentice jockeys' championship. Jockey
A jockey is someone who rides horses in horse racing or steeplechase racing, primarily as a profession. The word also applies to camel riders in camel racing. The word "jockey" originated from England and was used to describe the individual who rode horses in racing. They must be light, typically around a weight of 100-120 lb., and physically fit. They are typically self-employed and are paid a small fee from the horse trainer and a percentage of the horse's winnings. Jockeys are mainly male, though there are some well-known female jockeys too. The job has a very high risk of debilitating or life-threatening injuries. Etymology The word is by origin a diminutive of ''jock'', the Northern English or Scots colloquial equivalent of the first name ''John'', which is also used generically for "boy" or "fellow" (compare ''Jack'', ''Dick''), at least since 1529. Paul Cole
Paul F. I. Cole (born 11 September 1941) is a British racehorse trainer. Since 1987 he has been based at Whatcombe Estate in Berkshire, the former stables of Dick Dawson and Arthur Budgett. He was British flat racing Champion Trainer in 1991, the year in which he trained Generous to win the Epsom Derby. Notable owners he has trained for include Prince Fahd bin Salman and Martyn Arbib, and regular jockeys have been Richard Quinn and Alan Munro. In March 2020 Cole took out a joint training licence with his son, Oliver, who had previously been his assistant trainer. Pretty Polly Stakes (Ireland)
The Pretty Polly Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race in Ireland open to thoroughbred fillies and mares aged three years or older. It is run at the Curragh over a distance of 1 mile and 2 furlongs (2,012 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in late June or early July. History The event is named after Pretty Polly, a successful filly foaled in Ireland in 1901. It was originally restricted to fillies aged three, but it was later opened to older horses. For a period it was classed at Group 2 level, and it was promoted to Group 1 status in 2004. The Pretty Polly Stakes was part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge series from 2009 to 2012. Billy Loughnane
Billy Loughnane (born March 2006) is an Irish jockey who is based in Britain and competes in flat racing. He is the current British flat racing Champion Apprentice and twice British All-Weather Champion Apprentice. Background Loughnane is the son of Clare and Daniel Mark Loughnane, an Irish trainer based in England. Born in Ireland, Loughnane moved to England with his parents and brother Jack at the end of 2011, living first in Staffordshire and then, from 2017, at a new training yard, Rock Farm, near Kidderminster in Worcestershire. Julie Camacho
Julie Camacho (born November 1966) is a British Group 1 winning racehorse trainer who specialises in training horses for flat racing. She trains near Malton, North Yorkshire, with her husband Steve Brown as assistant trainer. In 2023 she became the first female trainer in Britain to pass the £1 million mark in prize money in a season. Career Camacho took over the licence at Star Cottage yard in Malton from her father, Maurice Camacho, in 1998. Her husband, Steve Brown, who had formerly been assistant to Luca Cumani, became her assistant trainer. As well as training, the family also breed racehorses. Norfolk Stakes (Great Britain)
The Norfolk Stakes is a Group 2 flat horse race in Great Britain open to two-year-old horses. It is run at Ascot over a distance of 5 furlongs (1,006 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in June. The event was established in 1843, and it was originally called the New Stakes. The inaugural running was won by Rattan. The race was renamed the Norfolk Stakes in 1973. It now honours the 16th Duke of Norfolk, who served as HM's Representative at Ascot from 1945 to 1972. For a period the event held Group 3 status, and it was promoted to Group 2 level in 2006. The Norfolk Stakes is currently staged on day three of the five-day Royal Ascot meeting.
