Ross High School (Scotland)
Ross High School is a large secondary school in Tranent, East Lothian. As of April 2021, the school roll was 1,259 (2021) making it the largest secondary school in East Lothian by pupil roll. The school was founded in 1954 and named after George Ross, who was convener of the local council at the time. The current head teacher is Paul Reynolds. History Before Ross High School was established, students from Tranent and surrounding areas attended Preston Lodge High School in Prestonpans. Until 1954 when a major effort to provide a 6-year school for Tranent and surrounding villages. The name Ross High recognises the support of the convenor of East Lothian Council at the time George Ross. The original building was built in 1954 and partially still stands. A Public Private Partnership (PPP) refurbishment began in January 2003 and after various delays, was finished in 2005. Tranent
Tranent is a town in East Lothian (formerly Haddingtonshire), in the south-east of Scotland. The town lies 6 miles from the boundary of Edinburgh, and 9.1 miles from the city centre. It lies beside the A1 road, the A1 runs through the parish splitting the parish from its associated villages and hamlets namely Meadowmill and the port of the parish Cockenzie. The original main post road ran straight through the town until the new A1 was built. Built on a gentle slope, about above sea level it is one of the oldest towns in East Lothian. The population of the town is approximately 12,140, an increase of over 4,000 since 2001. Tranent was formerly a major mining town, but now serves as a commuter town for Edinburgh. George McNeill (sprinter)
George McNeill (born 19 February 1947) is a Scottish former world professional sprint champion and the only man to have won both of the most famous professional footraces in the world – the New Year Sprint (1970) in Scotland and the Australian equivalent – the Stawell Gift (1981). McNeill had previously played professional football in the Scottish Football League for Hibernian, Greenock Morton and Stirling Albion. Football career McNeill grew up in the Scottish mining town of Tranent. He played football for the local team, Tranent Juniors, but also played rugby union for the school fifteen. In 1963 he left school aged 16 and became an apprentice quantity surveyor. While in the fifth form at Ross High School, Tranent, he was recruited by Hibernian FC as an apprentice footballer. Sean Mackie (born 4 November 1998) is a Scottish footballer who plays as a left-back for Falkirk. Mackie has previously played for Raith Rovers, Hibernian, Berwick Rangers, Edinburgh City and Dundee. Career Club Mackie joined Raith Rovers in 2015 from the Fife Elite Academy, signing a two-year contract. He made one first team appearance for Raith before moving to Hibernian in February 2016. Neil Martin
Neil Martin (born 20 October 1940) is a Scottish former football player, who scored 100 league goals in both Scotland and England and won three full international caps for Scotland in the 1960s and 1970s. Known for his strength, power, bravery and commitment, Martin scored consistently while playing for several clubs. He played for Alloa Athletic, Queen of the South, Hibernian, Sunderland, Coventry City, Nottingham Forest, Brighton & Hove Albion and Crystal Palace. Drew McMaster
Andrew Emlyn "Drew" McMaster (born 10 May 1957 in Edinburgh) is a retired Scottish sprinter. In 1976, he was Scottish, AAA's Indoor, and Junior 200 metres champion. He went on to win two further Scottish 200 metres titles in 1977, and 78. In 1978, he went with the Scottish athletics team to the Edmonton Commonwealth Games where he won the 4x100 relay Gold Medal alongside David Jenkins, Allan Wells, and Cameron Sharp. He also won the Scottish 100 metres championships in 1981 and 1982. He was runner up in the UK Championships in the 100/200 in 1978 and 1980. In 1980, he competed at the Summer Olympics in Moscow, where he competed for Great Britain in the 100 metres where he did not get past the quarter final, but he anchored the British team in the sprint relay that finished 4th in the final with a then British record of 38.62 seconds. Kirsty McBride
Kirsty McBride (born 9 September 1985) is a Scottish football midfielder who plays for Motherwell in the SWFL 2nd Division. She has represented the Scotland women's national football team more than 50 times at senior level.
