Ross-Johnson RJ-5
The Ross-Johnson RJ-5 is a single seat competition glider that was designed by Harland Ross and constructed partially by Ross and finished by Dick Johnson. The RJ-5 became one of the most famous gliders ever built when Johnson flew it in 1951, setting a new world distance record that endured for 13 years.Said, Bob: ''1983 Sailplane Directory, Soaring Magazine'', page 60. The aircraft utilizes a NACA 63 (2)-615 laminar flow airfoil and was one of the first gliders to achieve a 40:1 glide ratio. Johnson asked Ross to build the RJ-5 in 1948. Ross completed the design work and much of the construction, with help from Stan Hall, but by 1950 the glider was still incomplete. Slingsby Skylark 4
The Slingsby T.50 Skylark 4 was a British single seat competition glider built by Slingsby Sailplanes in the early 1960s. It sold in numbers and had success at national, though not world level competition. Development The Slingsby Skylark 4 is the final development of the Skylark series of gliders and was first manufactured in 1961 using an 18.2m span wing similar to that of the Skylark 3. About 30 Skylark 4s are still flying today (2010). Dive brakes or dive flaps are deployed to slow down an aircraft when in a dive.
