Roslyn Harbor is a village in Nassau County, on the North Shore of Long Island, in New York, United States. It is considered part of the Greater Roslyn area, which is anchored by the Incorporated Village of Roslyn. The population was 1,051 at the 2010 census. The Incorporated Village of Roslyn Harbor lies in both the Town of North Hempstead and the Town of Oyster Bay. History Roslyn Harbor incorporated as a village on October 17, 1931 as a result of the residents wishing to make their own zoning codes and other laws under the Municipal Home Rule Law. At the time, the majority of Roslyn Harbor consisted of a few large estates. The "Roslyn" part of Roslyn Harbor's name is shared with Roslyn, Roslyn Estates, and Roslyn Heights, and ultimately can be traced back to when the name "Roslyn" was chosen for that village, which was chosen because the geography in Roslyn reminded officials of the geography of Roslin, Scotland. Roslyn, New York
Roslyn ( ) is a village in the Town of North Hempstead in Nassau County, on the North Shore of Long Island, in New York, United States. It is the Greater Roslyn area's anchor community. The population was 2,770 at the 2010 census. History Roslyn was initially settled by colonists in the year 1643. It was originally called Hempstead Harbor, but its name was changed to Roslyn in 1844 due to postal confusion regarding all the other "Hempsteads" scattered about Long Island. The name "Roslyn" was selected as the new name, as its location in a valley reminded officials of Roslin, Scotland. Roslyn was incorporated as a village on January 11, 1932. Its first Mayor was Albertson W. Hicks, who was unanimously elected two days later, on January 13. Roslin (formerly spelt Rosslyn or Roslyn; Scottish Gaelic: Riasg Linne) is a village in Midlothian, Scotland, 11 kilometres (7 mi) to the south of the capital city Edinburgh. It stands on high ground, near the northwest bank of the river North Esk. The name The name Roslin (recorded in 1138 as ''Roskelyn'') appears to derive from Scottish Gaelic. Roslyn Heights is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of North Hempstead in Nassau County, on Long Island, in New York, United States. It is considered part of the Greater Roslyn area, which is anchored by the Incorporated Village of Roslyn. The population was 6,577 at the 2010 census. History Roslyn Heights saw a major economic boom in the 1860s shortly after the Long Island Rail Road's Oyster Bay Branch was built through and opened in the area. Starting in 1892, corporation was started to develop the northwestern section of the hamlet. Members of this development corporation included lawyers, bankers, and developers. This development, which was named Roslyn Highlands, was largely unsuccessful. Roslyn Estates is a village in the Town of North Hempstead in Nassau County, on the North Shore of Long Island, in New York, United States. It is considered part of the Greater Roslyn area, which is anchored by the Incorporated Village of Roslyn. The population was 1,318 at the 2020 census. History Roslyn Estates was first developed in the early 20th Century (circa 1908) by Dean Alvord, who also developed Prospect Park South in Brooklyn and Belle Terre in Port Jefferson. It was nicknamed "The Eden of Long Island" when originally developed, due to the community's design and setting. In 1931, residents decided to try incorporating Roslyn Estates as a village, due to the fact that the original deed restrictions were set to expire around that time. Interlaken is a village in Seneca County, New York, United States. The population was 602 at the 2010 census. The name is related to the village's position between two lakes. The Village of Interlaken is in the northern part of the Town of Covert and is northwest of Ithaca, New York. History First settled in the late 1790s and early 1800s, the Village of Interlaken was home to many families from the New England and New Jersey areas. Early businesses included hotels, blacksmiths, post office, bank, and in time the railroad station. All designed to support the local families and the farmers from the surrounding area. In the United States, home rule is an authority of a constituent part of a U.S. state to exercise powers of governance delegated to it by its state government.
