Roshan Abeysundara
Roshan Abeysundara is a Sri Lankan airman and swimmer, who also currently holds the Asian record for swimming across the Palk Strait as of April 2021. Swimming career Roshan pursued his career in competitive swimming as a schoolboy at the Matara Central College where he also completed his primary and secondary education. He has also obtained level II standard from Sri Lanka Life Saving, the national body for life saving and water safety related activities in Sri Lanka. He underwent training from the veteran Sri Lankan swimmer Julian Bolling. He is currently affiliated as a Level III swimming instructor with the American Swimming Coaches Association. Palk Strait expedition On 10 April 2021, Roshan intended to swim across Palk Strait starting from the point of Talaimannar at around Sri Lankan local time 2 am. Air Marshal Sudarshana Karagoda Pathirana psc, is a senior Sri Lankan Air Force Officer. He is the current Commander of the Sri Lanka Air Force. Born on 30 December 1965, Air Marshal Sudarshana Pathirana is an alumnus of Dharmaraja College, Kandy. Career Having joined the Sri Lanka Air Force as an Officer Cadet on the 2nd of July 1985, he completed his Basic Ground Training at Diyatalawa, securing the award for the Best Cadet of the 14th Officer Cadets Course. Pathirana was among a batch of pilots who were sent to the Pakistan Air Force Academy in Risalpur for advanced flying training, where he won the award for the "Best Allied Flight Cadet" from the PAF. Leading aircraftman (LAC) or leading aircraftwoman (LACW) is a junior rank in some air forces. It sits between aircraftman and senior aircraftman, and has a NATO rank code of OR-2. The rank badge is a horizontal two-bladed propeller. The rank was renamed air specialist (class 2) (AS2) in the Royal Air Force in July 2022. Danushkodi
Dhanushkodi is an abandoned town at the south-eastern tip of Pamban Island of the state of Tamil Nadu in India. It is south-east of Pamban and is about west of Talaimannar in Sri Lanka. The town was destroyed during the 1964 Rameswaram cyclone and remains uninhabited in the aftermath. Today only a few vendors and restaurants can be seen at Dhanushkodi during the day along with the ruins of the long destroyed town. Geography Dhanushkodi is on the tip of Pamban island, separated from the mainland by the Palk Strait. Transport The National Highway completed the 9.5-km-long road – 5 km from Mukuntharayar Chathiram to Dhanushkodi and 4.5 km from Dhanushkodi to Arichamunai. Talaimannar
Talaimannar ( ta, தலைமன்னார்; si, තලෙයිමන්නාරම) is a settlement in Sri Lanka located on the northwestern coast of Mannar Island. Transport Sri Lanka's northern railway line was destroyed, disrupted or neglected during the 30-year Sri Lankan civil war, which ended in May 2009. The Mannar railway line, rebuilt by an Indian company, was reopened by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015. The pier is served by a station of the Sri Lanka Railways with railway terminus at Talaimannar which connects Talaimannar to rail network in Sri Lanka via Medawachchiya. The town can be reached by a road from Mannar which links the island to the rest of highway network in Sri Lanka through a causeway. Julian Bolling
Deshabandu Julian Bolling (born 19 June 1966) is a Sri Lankan medal-winning swimmer who has represented his country at numerous international competitions. He is fondly remembered as the poster boy of Sri Lankan swimming as well as the pin-up boy of Sri Lankan swimming in the 1980s. He has won 15 gold medals for Sri Lanka at the South Asian Games between 1984 and 1991. He also represented Sri Lanka at three Olympic Games, firstly at Los Angeles (USA) in 1984, then at Seoul (South Korea) in 1988, and finally at Barcelona (Spain) in 1992. He was the first Sri Lankan ever to participate in three consecutive Olympics (1984, 1988 and 1992).
