Rosenblum Cup
Rosenblum Cup is an Open Teams event held every four years as part of the World Bridge Championships. The event was added to the world championships in New Orleans in 1978 to commemorate Julius Rosenblum, who served as president of the World Bridge Federation (WBF) until 1976. A similar event for women, the McConnell Cup, which takes place alongside the Rosenblum Cup was added in 1994. The full name of this championship is World Open Knockout Teams. The knockout format pertains only to the late stages, however, evidently a six-round knockout with 64 teams in recent renditions. It appears that the field has been divided into sixteen groups for round-robin play, with the top four advancing from each group to the knockout stage. World Bridge Championships
The World Bridge Championships consists of several sets of championships organized under the auspices of the World Bridge Federation. World Bridge Series Championships ''World Bridge Series Championships'' is the new 2010 name for a quadrennial meet organized by the World Bridge Federation in non-leap even years. (Another meet, the World Bridge Games, is held quadrennially in leap years.) Most of its world championship events are open in the sense that entries do not represent geographic zones or nations. The meet was inaugurated in 1962 as the ''World Pair Olympiad'' comprising the World Open Pairs Championship and World Women Pairs Championship, as well as the World Mixed Teams Championship. Sami Kehela
Sami R. Kehela (born 1934), sometimes spelled Sammy Kehela, is a Canadian contract bridge player. A member of the Halls of Fame of both the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) and the Canadian Bridge Federation, he and his long-time partner, the late Eric Murray, are considered two of the best Canadian players in the history of the game. Between 1966 and 1974, Kehela and Murray placed second in three Bermuda Bowls as one of three pairs comprising the North America teams. Unique among world players, they represented their country as a partnership in all of the first six quadrennial World Team Olympiads, from Turin in 1960 to Valkenburg in 1980. Together they won the Life Master Men's Pairs, the Life Master Pairs, the Vanderbilt, and the Spingold Trophy three times. Kehela and Murray were also runners-up in the 1969 Blue Ribbon Pairs. George Rapée
George Nicholas Rapée (May 22, 1915 – April 1, 1999) was an American bridge player. From 1942 to 1980 he was the most successful player in the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) in its three most important tournaments, the Vanderbilt, Spingold, and Reisinger. He played on the American teams that won the first three Bermuda Bowls, 1950 to 1953. Life Rapée was born and raised in New York City. His parents were from Hungary; his father Erno Rapée was a concert pianist and orchestra conductor. He earned bachelor's and law degrees at New York University and served in the US Army for three years during World War II. He was an attorney and real estate investor or, in the words of his obituary by Alan Truscott, "a real estate lawyer ... assembling properties for development". Mark Molson
John Markland "Mark" Molson (28 April 1949 – 19 January 2006) was a Canadian professional bridge player from Montreal and Fenton, Michigan. He was a member of the Molson family and attended Selwyn House School. Most frequently partnered with Boris Baran, he won the Canada national bridge team Championships seven times, seven North American Bridge Championships, and came in second as a member of the Canada open in the 1995 Bermuda Bowl. On September 5, 1998, his daughter, Jennifer Rose Molson, was born. He married fellow bridge world champion Janice Seamon-Molson, Jennifer's mother, on March 16, 1999. Janice is still a highly ranked Bridge player and Jennifer attended the New York Film Academy for musical theatre. Molson died suddenly of complications during an operation for a dissected aortic aneurism. This medical issue first surfaced while Mark was playing golf. Michael Seamon
Michael Seamon (January 15, 1960 – 2017) was an American professional bridge player from Miami Beach, Florida. Born to bridge players Rita and William Seamon, Michael was the youngest of three children. His sister, Janice Seamon-Molson, is also a nationally ranked bridge player. On September 3, 1992, his son Kevin William Seamon was born. Seamon died suddenly in 2017 of natural causes. Charles Coon (bridge)
Charles Coon (June 2, 1931 – January 18, 2003) was an American bridge player. He finished second in two world championships and won six North American Bridge Championships (NABC). A son of Carleton Coon, Coon was from Gloucester, Massachusetts. He graduated from Harvard College and served in the Korean War. Then he "devoted himself to playing bridge" but " like other top players, he spent nearly all his time playing for money in clubs and earning himself a modest income." He was manager of the Boston Chess Club as of March 1961. He died in Staten Island at age 71 in 2003. Coon's first "national"-level victory in the American Contract Bridge League was his greatest. He was one of "four young bridge experts led by Robert F. Jordan" who won the annual Vanderbilt Cup in 1961, when it was contested in a 64- double-elimination tournament. Björn Fallenius
Björn Fallenius (1957-2023) was a Swedish bridge player, for many years a resident of New York City. He and his late wife Kathy Fallenius operated the Cavendish Bridge Club. In world championship competition, Fallenius represented Sweden and won bronze medals in the 1987 and 1991 Bermuda Bowls and the 1988 World Team Olympiad. He also won bronze medals in the 1986 and 1998 Rosenblum Cups (on all-Swedish teams, although that quadrennial event is not nationally representative). In s competition, Fallenius and Peter Fredin won the European Bridge League Open Pairs in 2009 and finished second in the 2010 World Open Pairs (silver medal). Zia Mahmood
Mir Zia Mahmood (born 7 January 1946) is a Pakistani-American professional bridge player. He is a World Bridge Federation and American Contract Bridge League Grand Life Master. As of April 2011 he was the 10th-ranked World Grand Master. Biography Zia was born in Karachi, British India, now Pakistan. Zia was educated in England from the age of six to twenty-one. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant of the Institute of England and Wales and spent three years running a family business in Pakistan. He also spent eighteen months in Abu Dhabi developing business interests. Mahmood is married to Lady Emma, his wife since February 2001. She is the daughter of Neil Primrose, 7th Earl of Rosebery. They have two sons: Zain and Rafi. Steve W. Robinson (born January 4, 1941) is an American bridge player from Arlington, Virginia. Robinson has won three world championships and 24 North American Bridge Championships. Peter Boyd (born 1950) is a world champion American bridge player. He has won one world championship, finished second in another, and won 17 North American bridge championships. Boyd was born in Washington, DC and still lives there. He graduated from Harvard. He is a retired computer programmer.
