Rosemarie Burian
Rosemarie Burian, OSF, D. Min., (May 18, 1936 – September 22, 2019) was a Wheaton Franciscan Sister, teacher and founder of the Bethlehem Center/Northern Illinois Food Bank. Career She was the Pastoral Associate at St. Mark Catholic Church in Wheaton, Illinois. She went on to found Bethlehem Center, which is now called the Northern Illinois Food Bank. Through her experience with the St. Mark's Food Pantry, she witnessed the devastating effects of both spiritual and material poverty. Too many children were going to bed and suffered from malnourished, it is hard to imagine that hunger exists in the US but it does. So serious was the problem that the US Senate set up a select committee to look into the issue. Northern Illinois Food Bank
Northern Illinois Food Bank is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that focuses on providing food to those in need in northern Illinois. Partnerships and donors allow for more than 71,000 people to be fed each week through different programs. Northern Illinois Food Bank operates in 13 counties surrounding Chicago. The organization has four distribution centers located in Geneva, Rockford, Park City, and Joliet, which distribute food to pantries who then allocate the food to people. History In 1982, Sister Rosemarie Burian decided to create a food bank out of DuPage County, Illinois. In 1983 she opened the Bethlehem Center, now known as the Northern Illinois Food Bank. Franciscan

Wheaton is a suburban city in Milton and Winfield Townships and is the county seat of DuPage County, Illinois. It is located approximately west of Chicago. Bethlehem Center
Bethlehem Center was the dream of a person, Sister Rosemarie Burian, SJJ. She was a Pastoral Associate at St. Mark Catholic Church in Wheaton, IL and had seen many hungry families come into their food pantry. One morning she awoke with the conviction that a center for the poor was needed in Du Page County that would not only feed their bodies but also their spirits. She gathered together a group of like minded individuals. They met monthly for a year and eventually the dream became the Bethelehem Center. During that year Burian met with many people in the area who were concerned about the plight of the poor, pastors, Social justice advocates, other sisters and lay people. In time a warehouse on Easy Street in Carol Stream was found by Paul Wood, a local businessman who had worked with Nick Hindman a local accountant to procure the space. Malnutrition
Malnutrition occurs when an organism gets too few or too many nutrients, resulting in health problems. Specifically, it is "a deficiency, excess, or imbalance of energy, protein and other nutrients" which adversely affects the body's tissues and form. Malnutrition is not receiving the correct amount of nutrition. Malnutrition is increasing in children under the age of five due to providers who cannot afford or do not have access to adequate nutrition. The Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD) is a nonprofit organization that fights hunger throughout Cook County, Illinois. The GCFD distributes donated and purchased food through a network of 700 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and community programs, serving more than 800,000 adults and children every year. In fiscal year 2016, the GCFD distributed more than 70 million pounds of nonperishable food, produce, dairy products, and meat - the equivalent of more than 160,000 meals every day. Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF ) is a federal assistance program of the United States. It began on July 1, 1997, and succeeded the Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) program, providing cash assistance to indigent American families through the United States Department of Health and Human Services. TANF is often simply referred to as ''welfare''. The TANF program, emphasizing the welfare-to-work principle, is a grant given to each state to run its own welfare program and designed to be temporary in nature and has several limits and requirements.
