Roseland Cemetery
Roseland Cemetery is in Monticello, Florida. It was established in 1845 and is one of three city owned cemeteries. Old City Cemetery was established in 1827 and Oakfield Cemetery in 1986. African Americans were buried at Old Union Cemetery. The Florida archives include a photo of the Groom family's stone marker. In 2022 a moonlight cemetery walk was held. Monticello, Florida
Monticello ( ) is the only city in Jefferson County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,506 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jefferson County. The city is named after Monticello, the estate of the county's namesake, Thomas Jefferson, on which the Jefferson County Courthouse (Monticello, Florida) was modeled. Monticello is home to Indian mounds and many historic buildings, including the Perkins Opera House and Monticello Old Jail Museum. Geography Monticello is located in northern Jefferson County at . U.S. Route 90 runs through the center of the city as Washington Street, leading east to Greenville and west to Tallahassee. 3rd Florida Infantry Regiment
The 3rd Florida Infantry Regiment was formed near Pensacola, Florida, in July, 1861. Its companies were recruited in the counties of St. Johns, Hernando, Jefferson, Duval, Wakulla, Madison, Columbia, and Suwannee. The unit served along the coast at Talbot Island and Cedar Keys, then moved to Mobile. After fighting at Perryville it was assigned to Preston's, Stovall's, Finley's, J.A. Smith's Brigade, and during December, 1862, consolidated with the 1st Florida Infantry Regiment. The 1st and 3rd were engaged at Murfreesboro and Jackson, then participated in the campaigns of the Army of Tennessee from Chickamauga to Bentonville. It was organized with 950 officers and men, and the 1st and 3rd lost twenty-six percent of the 23 in action at Chickamauga. Dannite Hill Mays
Dannite Hill Mays (April 28, 1852 – May 9, 1930) was a U.S. Representative from Florida. Born near Madison, Florida, Mays attended the county schools, the public schools of Savannah, Georgia, and Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Virginia. He moved to Monticello, Florida, and engaged in agricultural pursuits. He served as delegate to the Democratic State convention in 1888. He served as member of the State house of representatives in 1891, 1895, and 1897, serving as speaker in 1897. He was an unsuccessful candidate for Governor in 1900 and 1904. Mays was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-first and Sixty-second Congresses (March 4, 1909 – March 3, 1913). He was an unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1912. Samuel Pasco
Samuel Pasco (June 28, 1834March 13, 1917) was an American politician who served as a U.S. Senator from Florida. Biography Pasco was born in London, England, to a family of Cornish ancestry. His family moved to Prince Edward Island in 1841 before moving to the United States in 1843 and settling in Charlestown, Massachusetts. Pasco attended Harvard University and then moved to Florida in 1859. He served as principal of the Waukeenah Academy, a school in Monticello, Florida, from 1860 to 1861. When the American Civil War began, though he had only lived in the South for two years, Pasco joined the army of the Confederate States of America. He fought as a member of the 3rd Florida Infantry Regiment. He was captured in Mississippi and imprisoned by the United States for the rest of the war. He was released in March 1865 and immediately returned to Florida to resume his post as principal of the Waukeenah Academy. He resigned from that position in 1866 but remained in Florida, serving ... Iwo Jima
Iwo Jima (, also ), known in Japan as , is one of the Japanese Volcano Islands and lies south of the Bonin Islands. Together with other islands, they form the Ogasawara Archipelago. The highest point of Iwo Jima is Mount Suribachi at high. Although south of the metropolis of Tokyo on the mainland, this island of 21 km2 (8 square miles) is administered as part of the Ogasawara Subprefecture of Tokyo. Since July 1944, when all the civilians were forcibly evacuated, the island has had a military-only population. The island was the location of the Battle of Iwo Jima between February 1945 and March 1945. This engagement saw some of the fiercest fighting of the Pacific War, with each side suffering over 20,000 casualties in the battle.
