Rose Hills, Los Angeles
Rose Hills is a neighborhood on the Eastside of Los Angeles. History The Rose Hills area is located near the original site of the Tongva village of Ochuunga, whose name derives from the Tongva language word for "wild rose." Historical reports and maps in archives indicate that Rose Hills was part of an 1839 Mexican land grant named "Rancho Rosa Castilla". The first recorded owner of the Rancho was Juan Ballesteros, registrar of the pueblo. After statehood, land claim #309 SD was filed in 1852 to confirm it. By the late 1850s the land had been transferred twice, and was owned by Anacleto Lestrade, priest at La Iglesia de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles, the mission church of the Pueblo de Los Ángeles. One of the original 36 adobes in California stood on Rancho Rosa Castilla. Hermon, Los Angeles
Hermon is a neighborhood in the northeast area of Los Angeles. It was established in 1903 and became part of Los Angeles in 1912. History Hermon was established in 1903, when the Free Methodist church group obtained the isolated valley from owner Ralph Rogers to establish a school. Rogers provided an additional one hundred building lots to sell for operating funds. The community of Hermon was organized around the campus, named after the biblical Mt. Hermon, and largely populated by families whose children attended the school. The school grew to become Los Angeles Pacific College in 1934, then closed in 1965 after the buildings were found to be too damaged to bring up to code. Up until 2003, the school campus held a private college prep high school, Pacific Christian. El Sereno (Spanish for "The Serene") is a Los Angeles neighborhood in the Eastside Los Angeles region of Los Angeles County, California. History Native American era The Native American village of Otsungna was situated in today's El Sereno on the banks of a stream that was later named Arroyo Rosa de Castilla, which ran east of present-day Guardia and Farnsworth avenues. A trail connected Otsungna to the village of Yangna on the Los Angeles River, then on to the village of Sibagna, near the eventual site of the Mission San Gabriel. ''La Iglesia de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles'' (English: "The Church of Our Lady Queen of the Angels") is a historic Catholic church in El Pueblo de los Ángeles Historical Monument in northern downtown Los Angeles, California. The church was founded by the Spanish in the early 19th century when modern-day California was under Spanish rule and known as Alta California in the Viceroyalty of New Spain. Rancho Rosa Castilla
Rancho Rosa Castilla was a Mexican land grant in the southwestern San Rafael Hills, in present day Los Angeles County, California, given to Juan Ballesteros in 1831 by Governor Manuel Victoria. It included present day Rose Hills, Lincoln Heights, City Terrace, El Sereno and portions of South Pasadena, Alhambra, and Monterey Park. After California statehood, the land grant failed to receive confirmation from the U.S. Public Land Commission. History "Rancho Rosa de Castilla" was named for the abundant amount of native Wood roses (''Rosa californica'') along the creek. Th KizhIndians named this area, ''Ochuunga'' (Place of Roses). Tongva Language
The Tongva language (also known as Gabrielino or Gabrieleño) is an extinct Uto-Aztecan language formerly spoken by the Tongva, a Native American people who live in and around Los Angeles, California. It has not been a language of everyday conversation since the 1940s. The Gabrielino people now speak English but a few are attempting to revive their language by using it in everyday conversation and ceremonial contexts. Presently, Gabrielino is also being used in language revitalization classes and in some public discussion regarding religious and environmental issues. Tongva is closely related to Serrano. Otsungna was a Tongva village located in what is now the El Sereno neighborhood of Los Angeles, California and California State University, Los Angeles. It was referenced as the "Otsungna Prehistoric Village Site" in the construction of State Route 710. The village has alternatively been referred to as Ochuunga, derived from the Tongva language word for "wild rose" and possibly translating to "Place of Roses." The Tongva ( ) are an Indigenous people of California from the Los Angeles Basin and the Southern Channel Islands, an area covering approximately . Some descendants of the people prefer Kizh as an endonym that, they argue, is more historically accurate. In the precolonial era, the people lived in as many as 100 villages and primarily identified by their village rather than by a pan-tribal name. Area codes 213 and 323 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the U.S. state of California. They are assigned to a numbering plan area (NPA) that comprises, roughly, the area of central Los Angeles, and includes several Southeast LA communities, such as Bell and Huntington Park.
