Roscommon–South Leitrim (Dáil Constituency)
Roscommon–South Leitrim was a parliamentary constituency represented in Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament or Oireachtas, from 2007 to 2016. The constituency elected 3 deputies ( Teachtaí Dála, commonly known as TDs). The method of election was proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote (PR-STV). History and boundaries The constituency was created for the 2007 general election by the Electoral (Amendment) Act 2005, which gave effect to the 2004 ''Constituency Commission Report on Dáil Constituencies''. It included all of County Roscommon and the southern portion of County Leitrim (the area to the east and south of Lough Allen). This territory was previously represented through the constituencies of Longford–Roscommon and Sligo–Leitrim, both of which were abolished in 2007. Dáil Constituencies
There are 39 multi-member electoral districts, known as Dáil constituencies, that elect 160 TDs (members of parliament), to Dáil Éireann, Ireland's lower house of the Oireachtas, or parliament, by means of the single transferable vote, to a maximum term of five years. Electoral law Article 16.2 of the Constitution of Ireland outlines the requirements for constituencies. The total number of TDs is to be no more than one TD representing twenty thousand and no less than one TD representing thirty thousand of the population, and the ratio should be the same in each constituency, as far as practicable, avoiding malapportionment. Electoral (Amendment) Act 2009
The Electoral (Amendment) Act 2009 (No. 4) is a law of Ireland which amended electoral law, including revisions to Dáil constituencies and European Parliament constituencies in light of the 2006 census. The new European Parliament constituencies were used at the election in June 2009. The revision to Dáil constituencies took effect on the dissolution of the 30th Dáil on 1 February 2011 and a general election for the 31st Dáil on the revised constituencies took place on 25 February 2011. Thirty-fourth Amendment Of The Constitution Of Ireland
The Thirty-fourth Amendment of the Constitution (Marriage Equality) Act 2015 (previously bill no. 5 of 2015) amended the Constitution of Ireland to permit marriage to be contracted by two persons without distinction as to their sex. Prior to the enactment, the Constitution was assumed to contain an implicit prohibition on same-sex marriage in the Republic of Ireland. It was approved at a referendum on 22 May 2015 by 62% of voters on a turnout of 61%. This was the first time that a state legalised same-sex marriage through a popular vote. Two legal challenges regarding the conduct of the referendum were dismissed on 30 July by the Court of Appeal, and the bill was signed into law by the President of Ireland on 29 August. John Ellis (Fianna Fáil Politician)
John Ellis (born 2 May 1952) is an Irish former Fianna Fáil politician, who was a Teachta Dála (TD) and Senator between 1977 and 2011. Born in Fenagh, County Leitrim, Ellis was a farmer and businessman before entering politics. He is married with three children. He was elected as a member of Leitrim County Council in 1974, and served as the council chairman from 1986 to 1987 and from 1992 to 1993. He first entered the Oireachtas in 1977, when he was elected to the 14th Seanad by the Agricultural Panel. He was first elected to Dáil Éireann at the 1981 general election for the Sligo–Leitrim constituency, and held the seat at the February 1982 general election. 2011 Irish General Election
The 2011 Irish general election took place on Friday 25 February to elect 166 Teachtaí Dála across 43 constituencies to Dáil Éireann, the lower house of Ireland's parliament, the Oireachtas. The Dáil was dissolved and the general election called by President Mary McAleese on 1 February, at the request of Taoiseach Brian Cowen. The 31st Dáil met on 9 March 2011 to nominate a Taoiseach and ratify the new ministers of the 29th Government of Ireland. John Kelly (born 2 February 1960) is a former Irish Labour Party politician who has served as a Senator for the Administrative Panel from 2011 to 2016. Martin Kenny (born 1 October 1971) is an Irish Sinn Féin politician who has been a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Sligo–Leitrim constituency since the 2016 general election. Career Kenny became a member of Leitrim County Council in 2001, when he was co-opted to replace Liam McGirl, the son of former Sinn Féin TD John Joe McGirl. A by-election was held in the Dáil Éireann Roscommon–South Leitrim constituency in Ireland on Friday, 10 October 2014, following the election of Independent Teachta Dála (TD) Luke 'Ming' Flanagan to the European Parliament. Michael Fitzmaurice (born 18 September 1969) is an Irish Independent politician who has been a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Roscommon–Galway constituency since the 2016 general election, and previously from 2014 to 2016 for the Roscommon–South Leitrim constituency. Before becoming a politician, Fitzmaurice used to run an agricultural and turf contracting business. He is the chair of the Turf Cutters and Contractors Association. New Vision (electoral Alliance)
New Vision was an electoral alliance of independent candidates formed to contest the 2011 Irish general election. The formation of the group was announced at a meeting in Dublin organised by the economist David McWilliams on 31 January 2011. Eamonn Blaney, son of former Independent Fianna Fáil Teachta Dála and minister Neil Blaney, stated that he was launching "a movement called New Vision" and that the group would run candidates in the upcoming general election. Luke 'Ming' Flanagan (born 22 January 1972) is an Irish politician who has been a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from Ireland for the Midlands–North-West constituency since 2014.
