Roosevelt School (St. John, Maine)
The Roosevelt School is a historic former school building on Maine State Route 161 in Saint John Plantation, Maine. Built in 1920 to a standard plan and used as a school until 1969, it is the only surviving historic school building in the small rural community. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. Description and history The Roosevelt School building is set on the south side of Maine Route 161, about east of the St. John Bible Church in the northwestern part of the small community. It is a single-story wood-frame structure, which is roughly rectangular in plan, with a projection extending across much of its front (north-facing) facade, and a small gable-roofed entry porch in front of that. The main block has a hip roof, which is continued over this projection, and there is a shed-roof dormer. Maine State Route 161
State Route 161 (SR 161) is part of Maine's system of numbered state highways. It runs from Fort Fairfield to Allagash. It begins at the Fort Fairfield - Andover Border Crossing along the Canada–US border to Dickey Road near the confluence of the Allagash and Saint John rivers. SR 161 runs through the communities of Fort Fairfield, Caribou, Woodland, New Sweden, Stockholm, New Canada, Fort Kent, St. John, St. Francis, and Allagash. Most of the portion that runs through Caribou has been re-routed, due to a bypass that was completed in 2012. The two-lane bypass now carries SR 161, and the old portion that runs through downtown Caribou has been re-signed as SR 161B. Saint John Plantation is a plantation in Aroostook County, Maine, United States, on the banks of the Saint John River. The population was 263 at the 2020 census. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the plantation has a total area of , of which is land and , or 2.45%, is water. Demographics At the 2000 census there were 282 people in 110 households, including 78 families, in the plantation. The population density was 5.6 people per square mile (2.2/km2). There were 147 housing units at an average density of 2.9 per square mile (1.1/km2). The racial makeup of the plantation was 100.00% White. Of the 110 households 33.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.7% were married couples living together, 6.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 24.5% of households were one person and 16.4% were one person aged 65 or older.
