''Rooney'' is a 1958 British comedy film directed by George Pollock and starring John Gregson, Muriel Pavlow and Barry Fitzgerald. It was based on the 1957 novel of the same name by Catherine Cookson. Plot The film depicts the life of James Ignatius Rooney, a Gaelic sportsman at the weekends, and a Dublin rubbish collector during the week. George Pollock (director)
George Pollock (27 March 1907 – 22 December 1979) was a British people, British film director, best known for bringing Agatha Christie, Agatha Christie's detective Miss Marple to the big screen for the first time, starring Margaret Rutherford. Life and work Born in Leicester, England in 1907, Pollock began his professional career as an assistant director, assistant film director in 1936. He collaborated in the 1940s with David Lean on such films as ''Brief Encounter'' (1945), ''Great Expectations (1946 film), Great Expectations'' (1946), and ''Oliver Twist (1948 film), Oliver Twist'' (1948). His first film as director was ''Stranger in Town (1957 film), Stranger in Town'' in 1957. Jack MacGowran
John Joseph MacGowran (13 October 1918 – 30 January 1973) was an Irish actor, probably best known for his work with Samuel Beckett. Stage career MacGowran was born on 13 October 1918 in Dublin, and educated at Synge Street CBS. He established his professional reputation as a member of the Abbey Players in Dublin, while he achieved stage renown for his knowing interpretations of the works of Samuel Beckett. He appeared as Lucky in '' Waiting for Godot'' at the Royal Court Theatre, and with the Royal Shakespeare Company in ''Endgame'' at the Aldwych Theatre.
