The Academy Award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling is the Academy Award given to the best achievement in makeup and hairstyling for film. Traditionally, three films have been nominated each year with exceptions in the early 1980s and 2002 when there were only two nominees; in 1999, when there were four nominees. Beginning with the 92nd Academy Awards, five films were nominated. The competitive category was created in 1981 as the Academy Award for Best Makeup, after the Academy received complaints that the makeup work in ''The Elephant Man'' (1980) was not going to be honored. Although no award was given to ''The Elephant Man'', an entire category dedicated to honoring makeup effects in film was created for subsequent ceremonies. Ve Neill (born Mary Flores; 1951) is an American makeup artist. She has won three Academy Awards, for the films ''Beetlejuice'', ''Mrs. Doubtfire'' and ''Ed Wood''. She has been nominated for eight Oscars in total. Early life Neill recounts that she aspired to be a make-up artist since the age of five and wanted to create monsters. As a child, she was known for painting the faces of her cousins with whatever was at hand, such as lipstick and shoe polish. Her interest in the makeup world was broadened by Leo Lotito, a make-up artist for TV shows who helped her with her Halloween costumes. A trip to a science-fiction convention at the age of 18 to gather inspiration ended with Fred Phillips taking her under his wing and a job on Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Joe Blasco (born April 30, 1947, in Jeannette, Pennsylvania) is an American makeup artist. Career Blasco has worked in Hollywood for 50 years and founded his own cosmetics company in 1983. In 1973, he founded the Joe Blasco Make-up Training Center in Hollywood and later opened a second location in Orlando, Florida in 1991.
