Ronalds Žagars
Ronalds Žagars (born 1950 in Ventspils) is a former Latvian football goalkeeper who played for Zvejnieks Liepāja and FK Daugava Rīga. Playing biography Žagars was a tall and powerful goalkeeper. He first played in Liepāja but was offered to join Daugava Rīga in the first Soviet league. in 1969. Over the first two seasons with Daugava he played only 12 matches and had to return to Zvejnieks Liepāja. In 1974, he was invited to Daugava again for the best season of his career – he played almost half of the team's matches (23) and had nearly the same amount of time in goal as his more famous colleague Laimonis Laizāns. Ventspils
Ventspils (; german: Windau, ; see other names) is a state city in northwestern Latvia in the historical Courland region of Latvia, and is the sixth largest city in the country. Liepāja
Liepāja (; liv, Līepõ; see #Names and toponymy, other names) is a state city in western Latvia, located on the Baltic Sea. It is the largest-city in the Kurzeme Planning Region, Kurzeme Region and the third-largest city in the country after Riga and Daugavpils. It is an important ice-free port. The population in 2020 was 68,535 people. Laimonis Laizāns
Laimonis Laizāns (born 30 January, 1945, died 16 November, 2020) was a former Soviet Latvian football goalkeeper who played for FK Daugava Rīga and Torpedo Moscow. He is considered one of the best Latvian goalkeepers of all time. Playing biography Laizāns was still a school student when he was approached by famous Latvian football manager Vadims Ulbergs and offered him to start training in football. At first Laizāns played on field but he didn't have especial talents. That would change when for one game the team he played for had no goalkeeper and Laizāns was put in goal and since then he only played in goal, although he himself didn't like it at first because he wanted to score goals himself. As at that time most sportsmen in Latvia played both football and ice hockey until 1965 Laizāns played both and only then decided to devote his career entirely to football. Aleksandrs Kulakovs
Aleksandrs Kulakovs (born 4 March 1956 in Dedinovo) is a former Latvian football goalkeeper who played for the biggest part of his career for Daugava Rīga. At the age of 15 Kulakovs was the first goalkeeper for Spartak Lukhovitsy. After having seen him play for the Russian SFSR team Konstantin Beskov offered Kulakovs to move to the reserves squad for FC Dynamo Moscow. In 1974, he moved to VEF Rīga in Latvia and won the Latvian championship in 1974 and 1975. In 1976, he moved to Daugava Rīga, the top club in Soviet Latvia which at the time played in the second division of Soviet football. In the first seasons he had to battle for his position on the field with Laimonis Laizāns and Rolands Žagars but soon he became the undisputed number one goalie for Daugava. Enerģija Rīga
FK Apgaismes tehnika (also known as ESR Rīga and Enerģija Rīga) was a Soviet Latvian football club from Riga, a four-time winner of the Latvian league. It went bankrupt together with the factory that supported it in the early 1990s. History ESR Rīga made its debut in the Latvian league in 1966 and already in the first season won it. One of the club's leaders Nikolajs Jermakovs after the season was signed by Soviet first league club Daugava Rīga. Still the club managed by E.Tantiba won the second league title in 1967. In 1968 the club was renamed as Enerģija Rīga. In the years that followed Enerģija was always among the top teams in the Latvian league but the next title was won only in 1976.
