Ronald Derrickson
Ronald M. Derrickson is an Indigenous leader from the Interior of British Columbia, Canada who was six times elected chief of the Westbank Indian Band and was made a Grand Chief by the Union of BC Indian Chiefs in 2012. He is also one of the most successful Indigenous businessmen in Canada and won an Aboriginal Achievement Award for Business and Commerce. Westbank Indian Band
The Westbank First Nation is a self-governing First Nations band in the Okanagan region of British Columbia, Canada, and is one of eight bands that comprise the Okanagan Nation Alliance. Westbank First Nation (WFN) is governed by one chief (Christopher R. Derickson) and four councillors, elected every three years by WFN membership (the current term is 2019-2022). As of April 2019, WFN's membership totaled 914 members, and employs more than 200 people. Government Westbank reserves were once part of the Okanagan Indian Band until they separated and became an independent band in 1963. 27 years later, in 1990, a framework agreement was entered into which allowed community-based self-government to be negotiated. Union Of BC Indian Chiefs
The Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs (UBCIC) is a First Nations political organization founded in 1969 in response to Jean Chrétien's White Paper proposal to assimilate Status Indians and disband the Department of Indian Affairs. Since the disbanding of the Allied Tribes of British Columbia in 1927, there had been many attempts to create a unified provincial organization, but conflict between the primarily coastal/Protestant Native Brotherhood of British Columbia and the primarily interior/Catholic National American Indian Brotherhood had been too great. At a three-day meeting in November 1969 in Kamloops, 175 provincial chiefs unanimously voted to create the UBCIC. In 1971, the UBCIC adopts its Constitution and By-laws and is incorporated under the BC Societies Act. Arthur Manuel
Arthur Manuel (1951 – January 11, 2017) was a First Nations political leader in Canada. The son of Marceline Paul of the Ktunaxa Nation and political leader George Manuel of the Secwepemc Nation, he grew up on the Neskonlith Reserve in the interior of British Columbia. Kelly Derrickson
Kelly Derrickson is an indigenous Canadian singer-songwriter from the Westbank First Nation in British Columbia. She is the daughter of Grand Chief Ronald Derrickson and Peggy Derrickson. Education Derrickson studied music and earned her degree at the Berklee College of Music and went on to develop a musical style called Country Tribal Rock. Career Her breakout hit was the 2013 recording of "Idle No More", where she "pays tribute to the struggles of aboriginal people in Canada.
